Free Shipping @ Midway

When Larry first started up MIDWAYUSA, it was free shipping for everything, regardless of the price.

When the kids took over, everything changed for the worse, IMHO!

As a retired commercial banker, I will say, most family owned companies do not survive the next generation.

I hope others don’t mind the tangent. I’d like to know, why do you think that is?

I apologize to all the family business owners that I might insult. My observation, the young generation sees the money, the parties and trips, the good times. But, they don't see the long hours and hard work required to build the business. So, they inherit a certain feeling of entitlement. Sometimes that will carry through to the third generation, just depends on the circumstances. Certainly there are many exceptions, but this was my experience.

I saw success derived from a true interest in the business, the market, and their customers (this was commercial, not retail). If you support your customers' success, they will support you.

This whole generation is about entitlement. No common sense whatsoever, and the worse ones are like what was mentioned, the ones that were never “shown the ropes” not just about taking over a business, but just everyday troubleshooting thru life. And when you call them on the stupid move they just made, oh boy out come a million excuses all the way to”you didn’t explain yourself well enough when you asked me to feed the dogs”.

i have to stop. I’ll ruin this thread. The stupidity that comes with the “its all about me” generation is a big time pet peeve of mine.

@elh0102 Thank you for the insight. It makes sense, especially if the children weren’t brought up working in or never took interest in the family business. It’s even worse if they were never introduced to it. Then again, markets change as do demand and competition. It’s interesting to think about.

A good example is WALMART.

Sam Walton had a vision:

”Only Made in America” in my stores.

He drove a pickup and lived in a modest 3 bedroom house in Arkansas.

When he croaked the kids split up the company and all of the Chinese Junk started flowing in.

More is the pity.
