Flying squirrel target

As i / we finished the model railway loops in the field yesterday, i think it is about time i start to look at that back and forth zip line target project of mine.
That should put some flavor on shooting 50 M

Even if i think it will just be a paper target on the zip line, the "engine" i have in mind for running this would probably not be able to carry 1 - 2 targets in metal.

Well when it was hot or i was just lazy to make steel ones i just downloaded and printed from a coloring book site or somthing and made the cardboard templates and just traced and cut them out on more cardboard to hang around to shoot.. just as good cheap and easy. for example...

Well i can draw a stick man, but i can grab something off the internet and use a printer.
Might also try a animal silhouette as a target, but i also think even a regular paper circle target will be entertaining when it zip back and forth at say 2 feet / second, and your window for shooting it are between 2 posts placed 16 - 20 feet apart.

I have contemplated rules and gotten to:

Target will travel back and forth 5 times.
Shots can only be made in between the two outer marker poles. ( window of opportunity )
As many shots as you can get in count. ( only manual cocking rifles )
Highest score win the bragging rights.

I guess it would he a good challenge..

Maybe a 12v motor on a old car battery to run it in the field . Like a old fan motor you could use but needs reduction to slow things down to somthing shootable.. pulleys or rheostat.
Motor and controller at amazon cheap enugh

I will initially try to use the drive unit from a old G-scale cable car system ( made by the LGB brand ) as i recall it do have a variable speed and also a variable idle time for when the lift are at the end and unloading people.

It is rather simple, you have a stop on the string loop, and then when it hit a stop resistance go up in the motor / electronics, something detect that and turn it off, then engage timer, and then reverse current so the lift go back again, and then it repeat endlessly with the 2 lift cars.

We already have this cable car system, it is just a matter if it still work, have not seen action in 12 years or so, but if not, i think with my modest electronics skills i can whip up something completely DIY

In the video the original coated fly line line like cable are used, we changed that to 0.30 mm braided fishing line as it is way less flexible.

My friend and i do like that there is some form of action when we shoot something, i am also contemplating making little domino tile sized bricks out of old roofing tiles, those should give a puff of " smoke" when hit, and of course "explode" into a million pieces.

Hehe we have only contemplated 1 target on the string.
If you made it really simple with just a loop of string and say 2 bicycle rims to hold / guide the string, you could let the target just run in one direction, but then on the return it ( the target ) would have its back to the shooter and we would have to glue 2 paper targets together.

We could also put a RC transmitter & reviver in play and a speed controller like in a RC car, i think at least to some degree you can set the radio system up so you can not go instantly from forward to reverse direction, and you might also be able to make some delay, and of course limit the MAX speed in either direction, that way one guy could act as panicked goofer with the RC transmitter while the other guy try to nail it.

But that would probably become rather stressful, unless you really dig into the max speed the target can move.

You could also bury the system, so it is like the cable cars in San Francisco, this way you could have a ground animal running back and forth on a guide rail.

I think I would shoot a LOT more if I could put up a gallery like that!

However, the neighborhood I live in has houses very close together and I am already cautious about the noise of a quiet .177 hitting a cardboard box filled with newspaper.

If I was clanging metal targets, my guess is I would not be able to pest much longer. (heavy sigh)

Too bad for me as I love the setup! (y) :)
I’ve been very fortunate. Today I shot for almost 3 hours. Doesn’t matter rain or shine, day or nite can shoot anytime. Don’t miss many days.
Tomorrow I’m going up around Algonquin Park, Maynooth area to my buddies shooting range. Crow

You lead a glamorous life crow... (chuckle)
Another 5 minutes I’m going to ask you to stop talking that way. LOL Crow
If you knew what I did for the last 5 months you would take that back. It’s 3;38 am right now, I can’t sleep I got poison ivy so bad for the last week head to toe, nasty. And I got bit while I got the Ivy, by something I thought I was going to lose my arm. I didn’t even know I got bit til my wife saw it. On 2 antibiotics and 3 creams. I had a picture but deleted, don’t need members puking on their computers, I-pads. Ya, you can skip the glamor. Crow

3 years ago i got a infection in my leg ( erysipelas ),,,,, apparently from nothing, CUZ while i had been out and about ( driving my scale RC 4x4 truck ) then i can not recall scratching myself or anything like that.
At first i thought it was a tic bite, but the doc said nope to that, anyway went thru a couple of months on various models of penicillin, cuz i went thru just about any model of "coccus" out there.

Anyway to this day the skin on my calf are still discolored.

It was somewhat of a bummer, it was mid summer and i spent a few days in bed going between freezing like a SOB and then sweating like a pig.

I have also arrived at work, more or less drenched in another persons blood,,,,, on my way to work i came about a accident and had to do CPR on a old guy trapped in wreck.
I was so amped up that even if i smoked several cigarettes during the 75 Km drive to work, i noticed nothing.

Things / sights like that do not scare me, but seemingly benign things on the other hand scare the hell out of me.

Wow Peashooter, a complete mystery. Makes you wonder. I got to go back out there and finish.
I didn’t attach the pictures and thought they would not be seen. Oh, now I know.
I got bit last year as well, wipper snipping. Got bit 6 times, never felt a thing by the time I finished my work, the bite was already seriously infected. Never had or heard of anything like this before, bugs and weeds. I still have to build my range. Scary. Crow
