Fixed power scope recommendations

Hey Odoyle,

I wonder if you're able to help me. I got a 10-40*56 scope from a buddy -- no name -- and the image is slightly blurred. Never totally crisp, irrespective of magnification or parallax setting. Diopter change doesn't help either. Any idea what it could be?

After optically centering the scope and for sure it did not help you can try adjusting the front objective in both directions as previously instructed with home made tool or 2 screwdrivers and see if that helps. Let us know how it goes otherwise if still not clear I'll give instructions to take it apart to dig further into it. May have lost its Nitrogen and gotten mold and the internal lenses just need cleaning.

Many thanks -- will do and keep you posted.

HOLD ON!!!

After optically centering the scope and if that doesn't make things clear I would see if that scope has warranty and if that buddy has a receipt just in case before proceeding any further. If it indeed is covered under warranty you may possibly get a brand spanking new scope back and no need to tinker further.

No worries, warranty has expired. He got the scope a few years back, lost interest and gave it to me. I made the tool you suggested. Works like a charm. I was worried that the lens might be glued. Put the tool in a vice, slid the scope over it down vertically, and applied clockwise pressure. Lens came loose! It was clean. At first blush the image will not become clear simply by turning in or out. The side focus adjustment makes a grinding sound, it may be the internals ... Will experiment more tomorrow!

Thanks a lot for the great advice, I also have a 100 yds fixed parallax scope, now I know how to adjust it down to 50!!

No name, China but nice enough height, windage and magnification adjustments. And the tube is intact/not deformed.

It's just the parallax adjuster that looks a bit dicey. I saw that on the inside, this adjuster makes a lens unit move up and down, under preload of a spring. I dropped a few drops of ballistol into that spring and polished the excentric adjustment wheel -- the grinding sound is basically gone. But i also saw that this tiny lens unit has some play, it seems to tilt slightly at low parallax setting. However the lack of a crisp image is along the entire parallax spectrum. Could it be caused by a lack of full lens alignment due to the play in this small lens unit? I dismantled the ocular lens as well, but could not fimd any issues there either. Perhaps it's just a cheapy scope, despite the nice glass etched reticle ...

By the way you were right -- i found the idea of messing with a precision optic intimidating st first, but it is actually not that daunting ...

I have a question about air rifle scopes. Years ago I had a Beeman HW77 with a Beeman 2-7X scope. The recoil eventually shook the innards loose. I understand that springers can do that to regular scopes. That was about 30 years ago. Have things improved since then?

I am looking for a 6X fixed power scope for my HW30.

No:

My gamo magnum ate some good scopes, even a Hawke. I found that the relatively affordable Leapers TS resist well. So do the ubiquitous Chinese rangefinder scopes -- around 40-50 bucks and in 2 versions: the 4-16 and larger 6-24. They come under different brands, like "B-brand".

I never tried a fixed mag on my gas ram springers, but would certainly install one one of these recoil compensation mounts (diana bullseye or its 15usd chinese knockoff).
