First time sadistic benchrest!!!

I shot my first 50yd benchrest today. I used my dream pup .22 with 18.1gr jsb. I shot against .22 power burners. Let me say I benchrest guys are sadistic! Lol I have been practicing 2xs a week since I got the dream pup on the 50 yd range a month ago. One of the guys told me I should come try the benchrest competition held monthly on the 100 yd range, but at 50yds. So I show up today and help set up the targets and wind flags. I get to the bench and look down range..... and the flags are pointed at each other!!! The wind was gusting 5-10 mph and swirling in between the building and the woods to my right. Now on the 50 range where I had been practicing the wind if there was any was a consistent direction!! So let me end my rant by saying... I know my gun isn’t a benchrest specialist. I had a great time today and will be there again next month. For the time between now and then I will be trying heavier pellets and practicing on the sadistic 100 yd range! Oh and I scored 380 out of 500. No Xs. Couple close ones though!

Try heavier pellets. My gun shines with 28.5g pellets from Seneca.

When the flags are pointing at each other, I just shoot right down the middle!

The closest flags (20yds) were point left and ones at 40yds pointing at each other. I doped right and went right. It was a crazy first time experience. But I will get better! The powder burner guys were surprised I scored that high.

HANG IN THERE. The range I shoot at is ALWAYS like that. I can set up 4 wind flags to 100 yards and all 4 can be pointing different directions because of our ranges berms and baffeling system. My motto is THE WIND IN MY FRIEND, and I must spend time getting to know him. IF you can shoot in winds like that, you should do well anywhere.

Wait until you have the flags pointing at each other at 25, and then one at 40 pointing straight up......



Keep at it man, learning how to dope the wind is the hardest, and also the funnest part of shooting bench rest.

Try some N50 cards. They are more appropriately sized for airguns at 50y. There are a couple versions at national50.org. I like the 8 1/2 x 11 if I’m printing them. Same rings, just in a tighter format.
