First time hunting this August.

Hi all.

I did not grow up hunting, and never have gone. For whatever reason, I've gotten interested in hunting small game recently, squirrels and rabbits.

I'm going for the first time this August, with a local DNR employee who has been hunting his whole life. I feel pretty lucky that I've got someone experience taking me out for the first time.

Anything I should know / think about from the collective wisdom here?

Go in with an open mind and don't take anything personally. Leave the ego at home and have fun.

Have taken new hunters out before and will very likely not take them again. They tend to read to much about something and get stuck in thr thought that it is the only way to do something. Makes it really annoying when you are trying to get them on an animal.

Have your gear sorted and have fun.

I did check with him on gear list and he said I'm good. I don't know the first thing about hunting, and particularly for small game there isn't much info online, unlike deer hunting for instance. So yeah -- very much going in with the attitude that I don't know nuttin.

Learn your weapon. Observe RELIGEOUSLY all safety precautions. All to many hunters have been shot when someone got excited and took a shot they should not have taken.

You are fortunate to have a DNR person to introduce you to the discipline.

Enjoy creation.

I feel really lucky that this kinda situation is going to be my first hunt, yeah. I sorta wish I was using shotgun the first time, because I've got about 10k rounds through my model 12, but I picked up airguns specifically for small game and low noise so we shall see.

Nice first hunt!

Advice:
Don't outshoot him!

Unlikely lol.

just 'love' being out in the elements and bugs .. dont complain be hurt and hungry thats the worst ... and dont shoot your buddy in the as, thats a plus .. nothing like killing something yanking its vicera out and snacking on it lol ..

Thankfully, while I didn't hunt growing up, I did do lots of long backpacking and camping trips so basic wilderness skills etc I've got.

When in doubt.... don't. You always have the option to pass on a shot that is not to your advantage.

Thanks, that seems like good, sensible advice.

My advice would be to remember that it’s called hunting not killing for a reason so if you don’t see anything it’s normal you just had a nice walk in the woods. Make sure to always treat your gun as if it were loaded always pointed in a safe direction. Lastly know what is behind what you are shooting at. Biggest thing is like everyone had said just enjoy yourself and listen to the person you are going with unless they are asking to do something you feel unsafe with.
