First Test Session - Wildcat MK2 .22

Setup around 0715 hours, barely daylight, zero wind, shooting off front/rear bags down a slight incline to a measured 50 yards. STX barrel installed.

I already knew the gun didn't care much for the jsb 18gr from yesterday so went with FX brand 16gr. The top 4 circled are 4-shot groups and the final on the second row is 8-shot. It likes the 16gr. The JSB 18gr, not so much. Around lunch I made another trigger adjustment (bad idea) and tried again, very gentle breeze. I started with the JSB 18gr but grew disgusted and switched to Air Arms 16gr.

Obviously, I am pretty chuffed with the 16gr FX and Air Arms. I can pull off dime size fairly regular which is my standard since that's how the Regal performs but the JSB 18gr is a big disappointment. The Regal is the same way, loves the 16gr but not so great with the 18. I was hoping one gun would favor the 18gr. Maybe I should try with the regular smooth twist barrel...? The second trigger adjustment was a mistake. Notice the right side bullseye, second row... second stage broke before I was even ready twice so that group is completely missing a shot or 2. I made another slight adjustment, so hopefully that demon is exorcized.

My biggest problem is I'm shooting off my bench down a slight incline towards a 50yd target so the front bag is a bit too high and I can't jack the butt stock up high enough to get real solid. That big dip under the rear stock is not playing well with the rear bag. I've got a bipod incoming that'll adjust down to 4.75", so I'm thinking that should cure the problem and let me get a more solid support. I can tell that I'm having to manhandle the gun way more than I should to get on target and keep it there. Once I get that settled and grow more acclimated to the gun, I feel sure I can bring the consistency up a lot. Did I mention I love the smooth, easy side-lever cocking?

cheers

Maybe are the jsb 18.13 gr my regal was shooting them very good. Now it doesn't I try them with the cricket and the same thing happens..check the back of your tin of pellet to check if they are the same, I got this from pyramid Air..

Well I feel like an idiot since that didn't even occur to me. Mine don't have that round sticker, just a tag. I think they came from AoA when I received the regal.

I notice they say 5.53 (head size?) And the Air Arms that shoot so tight have 5.51

Seems like the AA came from Trenier Outdoors.

My impact requires speed adjustment to shoot heavier pellets accurately maybe check fps.

Thanks, I have a badly needed chronograph on order. I'll get some hard numbers and probably another tin of jsb 18.13gr so I can figure this out.

Nice results with the 16s!

You might also like to try H&N Baracuda Match 21 gr? They shoot incredibly well from my Red Wolf .22. And the heavier weight seems less influenced by wind. Pyramid Air sells them in a variety of head sizes.

They have an “order 4 pay for 3” deal that is pretty good, especially if you decide you will use a particular pellet going forward and order enough for free shipping.

Are you loving the Wildcat MkII? I think that may need to be my next air gun.

Thanks for the info. I haven't tried any H&N yet but I did finally get a hold of some of the JSB redesigned 25.39gr which should be here tomorrow. Used that same 'get one free' deal from PA. I'll keep those HN 21gr in mind for a future order.

Aye, still enjoying the WC but I share the love with the Regal. So far, all my shooting has been unsorted, straight from the tin. Fairly regular dime size at 50yd (depending on brand/weight) so why bother but figured it might help with consistency. So I finally broke down and washed, then sorted by weight last night. Haven't shot any yet though. Also got two sets of TTS sizer dies in the mail today, 5.51 and 5.52. I noticed that both my guns shoot the AA 16gr with 5.51 head very well. The JSB 18.13 with 5.53 head not great, 18.13 with 5.52 head... decent but not great so I plan to do some trials. Good times!

Could you put a block, 2x4, ect, under the back legs of your bench? Kind of match the "slight" incline?

I find the JSB 18 gr groups a bit better than the 16 gr, unless there is no wind at all, then they seem about equal. I haven't tried the 25.39 gr JSBs, I will definitely have to do that. I tend to prefer heavier weight for caliber, in air guns and powder-burners too.

The H&N Baracuda Match 21 gr with 5.51 head size are awesome in my Red Wolf - better than either the 16 or the 18 gr. JSB. But now I really want to check out the redesigned 25 gr JSBs that you mentioned.

I haven't ventured into washing or sorting.... yet.

Your re-sizer dies sound interesting. I would imagine that it just re-shapes the skirt? Or does it resize the ball head, as well? I need to look into those.

I have also been trying the H&N Hunter Extreme 18.5 gr (hollow points) and find them to be not as consistently accurate as the Baracuda Match 21 gr. I am stocking up in the Baracuda Match 21 gr!

Dhart, I'll definitely give those 21gr Barracuda Match a spin.

As for the resizer dies, the TTS dies reshape head and skirt which I've read is not optimal. The head should be slightly smaller than the skirt.

There is another resizer, the TR Robb, that is adjustable so the head can be sized a fraction smaller than the skirt.

Or if you just simply wish to size the heads, not resize, you can use the pellet gauge... PelletGauge.com Lots of good info on the forum if you do some 'sorting, weighing, sizing or resizing' searches. You may regret jumping down this rabbit hole since it can become obsessive and time consuming. For me, the jury is still out as to whether the results are worth the effort. Great to hear you're enjoying the Red Wolf. cheers
