My little 40 lb rescue hound started barking about 3:30p and I looked for a boat fishing or an animal in the yard. I saw an animal and at first I thought it was a cat. She doesn't get to go out to chase cats. I don't want trouble with the neighbors or vet bills for her. But then I saw it was a raccoon. It should not have been out and about in the daytime. I grabbed the P35-22 and tried to get out of the door without her following but I failed and she went for the coon. She bit it several times and it was trying unsuccessfully to retaliate. I called her off and put a 21 grain pellet in it. I'm not sure where that one hit but it stopped walking away but was not down. I then shot it between the eyes. That one caused it to lie down and my dog grabbed it in the middle and she shook it pretty violently. But when she put it down it still seemed to be breathing so I put a finisher in it's neck. Blood came out pretty good so I don't think it's heard stopped until after that.

If it had been dusk or during the night I would have left it alone. But I was afraid it was rabid and a threat to pets and even people in the neighborhood. It weighed 7 lbs 12 ounces on my fish scale. It was a male. It is in a trash bag now and will go to the dump next run. I checked my dog over and I'm pretty sure she did not get bit. She is also vaccinated against rabies.

My P35-22 shoots 21 grain H&N Baracuda Match about 835 fps or about 32 fpe. It did the job but seemed a bit light. It drops squirrels very quickly with brain or body shots but they don't weigh almost 8 lbs either. I think one of my 25s would be better, preferably with a bit more fpe. But I am pretty sure the shot between the eyes killed it and the first shot might have. It was not getting away after the first shot. But I don't like it when it takes multiple hits to be sure the animal is dead.

Thanks. He wasn't drooling or anything and looked a little skinny. He wandered into the wrong yard, however. I thought about just letting him wander off but then the dog got out and I pretty much had to take him. I was surprised he didn't move quickly to a tree or over the fence. If he had run off I would have let him go. His slow movements did not seem normal to me. Even when the dog was after him he was just walking slowly.
