First N50 card with SURELY

Springtime where I live means it's WIND season! Yesterday it was 10-15 mph, and the day before was 15-20, and worse on Sunday, anyway you get the story... A real PITA when it comes to shooting. This morning the branches weren't moving in the junipers and ponderosas so I flew out the door, lol, and got all my stuff out and set up!

SURELY is what I named my Thomas HPX 22 cal PCP air rifle. Sends MRD's at 910 fps. I used pellets straight out of the tin so no sorting of any kind. Here's my amatuer BR set up. Yep I just used tactical squeeze bags and a WorkX bench.

Here's a introduction to SURELY I wrote a while back shortly after I received her from Mik N.

Wind was 0-3 mph and you can see the direction of the wind which thankfully wasn't switching. I aimed 1-3 scoring rings out most of the time. COLD out at 21 degrees. The target was set where that standing rock is.

My results at 51Y. 51Y in stead of 50Y because the sun was washing the image out in my scope so I had to back up into the shade. Not bad for my first time with SURELY on a BR card. I think I ran off the reg at least once, maybe twice (9's all low right), because my SCBA only had 3400 psi in it and it goes off reg at 2300 psi. Possibly the reason for the low shots but one went off before I was ready, the trigger is only 3oz??? I shot a lot of sighters but wish I had shot more. I'm not a BR shooter, but as time goes by I'll learn! Oh and I used Mike's N50 plug to score the target.

Steve, looks like if you had just tethered your bottle to Surely you wouldn't have had to worry about reg pressure and those 9s would have been 10s? Remember I think the N50 allows tethering...?

You're right!

When I texted Mike N this morning, after I sent him the pic, that was what he said to do too.

My Tuxing via your suggestion, coming from Brian and Deb of Veradium Air, should be at my place on Friday!

For us amateurs , exactly how do you benchrest shooters “tether” your gun to bottle?? Pics and explanation would be great

I've never done it but I have a long skinny fill hose that I can use to hook up to my rifles male foster fitting and leave it on there while I'm shooting. I don't have a regulator on the tank so I have to make sure the SCBA tank is below 4000 or so PSI. If I had a regulator on the tank I could adjust that to 4000 psi to take advantage of 4500 psi in the tank.

Is that correct Mike N?

Hi Steve...nice target. Yes, that’s basically correct. The amount of pressure you had in your scba tank (3400) would be ideal. It will shoot a long time on that before you hit internal reg pressure. If you used an external reg on your scba tank, you only need to set the reg on the scba to a couple hundred over internal reg pressure. If you are going to tether, you may as well use as little pressure as possible.

Okay, GTK Mike, thanks.

I think I'll just post all my targets per date and time that I shoot with SURELY. I used the same funky set up as the other day. I can see the crosshairs jump in different directions when I shoot which isn't good. My form isn't quite right all the time.

So these 3 cards were on 4/2/21 between 6:45 and 8:30 am. Winds were switchy which was frustrating/ the 245 and 246 cards. For 20 shots the 248 - 15x card had consistent right to left wind from 4-7 mph and the bottom row of 5 with the question marks the wind starting switching again. I'm learning a little but not much??? I definitely need to try my other BR set up which is more solid but I need to find something to put under the rear BR bag first because the barrel points up too high.

Hey Steve,

I needed some shims for my rear bag so I took some various thicknesses of exterior plywood and used dowels to lock each course together to keep them from sliding around. Then added a piece of Yoga mat to the bottom piece to keep it from sliding around on the bench. This has worked well for me so maybe it will give you or someone else some ideas.
