First ND Jack taken with 21gr H&N. It was about 50 yards and went down after taking a pellet between the shoulder blades. At 42 inches from toe to toe it makes the huntsman regal look like a small gun. This was number 8 that I saw in over 6 hours of hunting. Between unknown ranges and rabbits that won’t hold still it was quite a challenge.
Good golly, that is a big rabbit. Nice shot! In the desert, our jack rabbits will often pause in their running if you whistle sharply or even lip squeak. I do recognize that in cold weather they will run much farther between stops.
I bred Flemish for a while. Even the cross breeds were huge. Our doe was 19# of electric blanket type warmth. She likesd to watch TV with the kids. The Giants took no guff from the dogs. Highly recommend them if you have the room.
That's because you're looking at a snowshoe hare. Rather than a black-tailed jackrabbit like we have in New Mexico.
The black-tailed jackrabbit does not phase change like the snowshoe hare does. The jackrabbit is the same color year round, while the snowshoe hare changes to White in the winter time and then back to Brown / gray in the summertime
I don't think it's a Snowshoe. Maybe the Montana Jacks have a white phase in winter. Or could possibly be a Hybrid Snowshoe/Jack. Look up the Wiki page on Snowshoes. They aren't huge. They look like Cottontails with large hind feet, and smaller than average ears.
These are about twice the size of a snowshoe hair. But they do change color in the fall and back to brown in the spring. The amount of meat on these guys is unreal. Mild in flavor. One back strap is about one inch round and 12 inches long. In one Hind leg there is as much meat as two hind legs off a snowshoe hare.
