First Impact Coyote

After several attempts over the last couple of years it finally happened. First stand this morning where I've taken a coyote in the same spot with a firearm. Maybe 5-6 minutes into the "Lucky Bird" playing on the my Fox Pro set at about 45yds away she appeared from nowhere when I had looked away for a second and was standing just beyond the call. I was shooting for the center of the chest but was off center just a tad but the angle she was standing sent the NSA 25 29gr straight into the vitals. As you can see she spun around wildly and took off. I found her about 30-35yds from the point of impact. The video was shot with a Phonescope mount with a FireFly camera. Did a few more stands and only saw one other while walking in. I was busted...

Great shot. Why don't our coyotes in our area stand perfectly still for us? JK. Kudos to you for being able to film your shot. Most people don't know how hard it is to do that. I'm sure having to turn on the camera, have a good guess on your target and then shoot took a few seconds but most will think you had all the time in the world to make that shot. I've gotten many people who criticize my videos for not making the perfect shot everytime.

Thanks guys,

@wyshadow, your right most of the time they show up and leave so fast your lucky to even get a cross hair on them. As far as the camera work, I was leaving the camera powered up, the gun at my shoulder so all I had to do was slowly push the record button.

@qball, I thought about retrieving the slug just to see how deep it traveled and how well it expanded. If I'd had a pair of rubber gloves and a good knife I probably would have. I did have a cheap Chinese clone of a Leatherman that always stays in the truck but that probably would have been a real sloppy mess. I'll go more prepared next time and hopefully not jinx myself.

thanks Kevin, I knew the damage these slugs were capable of after shooting some smaller critters and defenseless cantaloupes. A head shot would have been a quicker kill but also a better chance of glancing wound I thought. I wouldn't hesitate on another frontal or side shot into the vitals.

Jim, about 53fpe at 50yds, I believe it came in on the inside and low of the shoulder blade or any heavy bone. Broadside and through the actual shoulder blade would probably make a huge difference, which would make the shot a little high anyway.

@legionair, I left it in the field. The pelt if it was worth anything was pretty poor. I mainly hunt for the benefit to the deer in the area. Funny when I parked to get my gear out the truck and head to that first stand, I glanced around behind me and about 100yds away were two does and three fawns. A little bit later about a 1/2 mile down the road I saw a single doe and three fawns which was pretty rare.

@jtnm, thanks John, appreciated.
