First i ever seen this.

So ol'Ruff and i were treeing squirrel and he had one on the go . The squirrel came down the tree just in front of Ruff and the chase was on around a part layed over holly tree . So i was in a good spot for them to come around and figured the squirrel was going to go up one of the next trees but they never came around that holly. I could see flashes of Ruff doing somthing in one spot and thought " did he catch it on the ground?".

So i get there and ol'Ruff is nothing but hind 1/4 up out of a hole trying to get deeper...lol. ( wish i had the camera right then with him deeper in the hole)

So that squirrel ran into the hole instead of up a tree .

Thats a new one for me. First time i ever seen that. Poor Ruff was enugh pissed to dig and rip roots in his way out with his mouth.. little fool.

I shot a groundhog out of a tree once, but I never saw a squirrel pop out of a hole in the ground......

That is a new trick.
I’ve shot many a ground hog on the “ground”, near their holes, etc. The only one I ever regret killing was one sunning itself in a tree over a farm field. Still remember that ruefully.

Mine was in a Mulberry tree.

I was out in the pre dawn to squirrel hunt. When the light came up and it was legal shooting hours I noticed what I thought was a world record Grey squirrel in a Mulberry..........

My brother in law thought it was pretty funny, I thought it was a downright dirty trick, and the groundhog got what he deserved for his deception.

Now got to wonder how many i thought i just lost site of has did this ?

Well the next one he treed i popped him for his fatch and bring it training. I get him one like every 2 werks so he stays brushed up. He dont forget the treeing part but gets selfish on the bring it part once in a while.. its mine all mine kinda thing when off the 50' training leash .. most times he does right with out it.

I have had tree rats use all manner of deception to try and get away once wounded. They have crawled under large rocks, burrowed into brush piles, and hidden under lumber and roof tin laying on the ground. Tricky little buggers. All the more reasons to make a clean quick first shot. At least that is the idea.

Happy hunting to you and Ruff.
Doc
This one was not shot or wounded , but maybe that it goofed and had Ruff right on its tail in desperation..

Thing eas why the squirrel came down the tree instead of running the limbs as one normally would. The canopy is thick so it's not like a no choice thing.
