My Taipan developed a leak ( .22 long ) and I decided to dig into it yesterday to address. Readers digest - I found the leak, cleaned it up, replaced an oring, put 200 bar worth of air into it and let it sit for an hour or two to see if holding (it did). Since I had it apart I decided that I was going to change it up ( just for the hell of it ). Different barrel in it, different rings and scope on top - got a pretty good down and dirty "MRD's" tune on it out to 70 yards - furthest I can go in my back yard. MRD's flying @935 - cool.
This afternoon Molly and I decided that we'd head over to the gun range that I shoot at and further test it out - I have a small pile of light slugs in various sizes and weights . . . curious to see if I might be able to get something going with it. I'm NOT going to touch the "MRD" tune though as that seemed to be pretty good - could have used some fine tuning - speed 'em up a little, maybe slow 'em down a little .. . you know - little tweaks. All in all the tune seems pretty good though so just leave that as a base. First couple of slugs I put in it didn't group very well at 30 yds ( in various sizes and weights / mfgs ) - a couple did - they'd get tested later at 51. Those that did well at 51 got pushed out a little further to 70. The little sample bag of .2165 23g NSA's really surprised - they shot exceptionally well - maybe even better than the MRD's did. Again - nothing changed on the gun - still at the "MRD" tune. Hell - even the scope settings were the same - 30 and 51 yds were both the same (essentially "zero") and 11 clicks up for the 70 yard board. The slugs were actually tighter out at 70.
Molly's getting antsy by now - and I'm a little cold - she wants (expects) to go for a run on some of the nearby hiking trails like we usually do when at this place. Gun is going to come off reg pretty soon anyway and I just need to move around and get some blood flowing / get warm. So we head out for a quick hike / run for her. Half hour - forty five minutes later we're back and about to get into the car when lo and behold out in the field what is THAT I think I'm seeing??? She see's it too I think . . . and she's getting amped up. I'm just eyeballing mr. chuckie out there and thinking to myself . . . " . . . man that ~looks~ to be 70'ish yards . . . " and I KNOW the gun seems to be shooting pretty good at that distance. Again - I'm just down there playing / testing - I've not put tape on the turret or anything - I did reset the top turret to zero at the 30 yard distance, I know that it seems pretty flat out to 50 and as mentioned earlier 11 clicks up to 70.
I grab my rangefinder. 72'ish yards . . . . "Ohhhhhhhh Molly - we're gonna get us a chuckie . . . . !" ( lol ) I pull the gun back out of the car and standing behind it using the roof of the car as a "bench" and gun parked on a small sand bag - I dial up just one more click (12) - pew!
Chuckie went DRT. Down - didn't flinch, jump around, spasm - nothin'! Booyah! Molly bolted off after it and she proceeded to pounce on it and pretend like she was the great white huntress.
Well that was a fun, unexpected way to end what was supposed to be just a testing / playing around session. I'm going to further pursue these little 23g slugs . . . .
