Finding a place to shoot

Hi all. I've been looking for a place to shoot that is secluded from any residential area and I think i have found one. I have been looking at this place for quite a while now. The woods i want to shoot in is about a mile long and about 3/4 of a while wide. before I scouted it out I looked to see if there were any no trespassing signs and there were not any posted. I want to know if any of you would take the chance and go and shoot on it. i have also seen people dump their old furniture at this location. this is what it looks like for the entire mile. nothing but a guard rail. any response would be appreciated.

"FunGun"I don't know how things are on CT, but in a lot of states you can look up who owns the property on line using the county appraisal office website. Basically use the taxing entities to help you figure out who owns the property. Hope this helps.
So I looked on my town appraisal map and the land doesn't have any parcel ID. and i think the parcel ID is required to find out who owns it.

I would contact the appraisal office and inquire as to who owns the land. Should have a phone number on their website. Since it is along the roadway, it might belong to the county? The State? If there is a railroad running parallel to the roadway it might belong to the railroad. I would highly recommend you run this to ground and find out who has jurisdiction over the land. Last thing you want to to is trespass with your favorite gun in hand. You might loose your gun as well as get your pocket book lightened should they choose to flex their muscle. Good luck I hope it works out you can get permission, keep us informed.

Some one owns it, that's for sure. You need to find out who and get permission first. Kind of hard to ask after getting caught!

when I was a kid, my buddy and I use to go fishing in a farmers pond way back in the woods in the middle of a 2 mile section. We went several times and never seen any one. We didn't know who owned it. Then one day, a man came up to us and asked what we were doing. We told him we were fishing and wanted to ask permission to fish, but didn't know who owned the pond. He said he owned it. So we asked if we could fish there. He said yes, today only and to never come back! Come to find out, this man and my dad were good friends. We fox hunted several times together after this. But he would never let me fish his pond again. Sorry for the story. This thread just brought back some memory's!

yeah i see where you are coming from. i scouted it out a little more today i found out that it was apart of a tiny little park next to it that was found to have contaminates on site(just started decontamination project). the park doesn't go into the forest. the actual forest part is no longer a part of the park and is county property.http://stamfordct.maps.arcgis.com/apps/SimpleViewer/index.html?appid=8bd89187b7324a57b263d51bd020cc40 the land is in tax zones 25,26,34,and 35. the woods is just above that marked park. might i add that there is no parcel id or tax id.

You can go to the county tax appraiser's office and they will tell you who owns the property and its zoning. If county owned then you need to
get permission from the county commission. If you are in a small town I would go to the Sheriff's office and ask them if they know if it is ok
to shoot there. Also ask if they know of any places close by there to shoot or suggestions for alternate shooting places. The reason to go
to the Sheriff before the commission is they will most likely say they want to check with the Sheriff. If you have a letter from the Sheriff then
you will not be put off until the next meeting of the commission (usually a month) for them to give an answer. Being next to a park I think you
have an uphill battle. Second is it is a contaminated property there is liability for you being out there. Good luck and hope you get a safe place to
shoot soon.

great points. i did some research and they apparently started the decontamination process last year and finished it a month and a half ago. also this morning i noticed a little sign on a telephone pole that said "Northeast Utilities system property". idk if its just for the telephone pole or the land but ill find out.
