Field Target club in Iowa

Facebook monthly update.

This is the Iowa Field Target Association monthly report for June 2025.

The next field target competition with the Iowa Filed Target Association will be held Sunday July 13, 2025 starting at 1:00 pm.

At the West Liberty Gun Club.

The Facebook group now has 45 members.

Thank you to all the people that are making this happen.

The weather is very hot. Sun screen and pop up tent time. Definitely need a hat. And light weight long pants keep the flys away. I go to the range at 8:00 am and shoot for an hour or so every Saturday and Sunday if anyone wants to join me.

There is continuing construction on the airgun range at the West Liberty Gun Club.

Over the next month I am hoping to construct a bench rest shooting lane. There is going to be a seventy five foot lane cut just west of the Field Target course. And the field

Target course will now have five lanes with three targets per lane.making it a 30 shot loop.

The bench rest lane will have the sight in range for field Target with markers from 10-75 yards. The bench rest targets will be set at 50 and 75 yards and have Target stands for silhouette shooting and 50 shot target cards.

And a spinner set

The sight in range will have spinners set ten yards apart for the entire length of the lane.

The airgun range is open to the public and club members. The sight in range is set with permanent markers and you can move your own targets in that area.

There are animal silhouettes with open kill zones set in the field target lanes. These are operated by shooting the lower paddle then the upper kill zones is reset. Feel free to move the animal targets. Don’t push them in to the ground by the silhouette. It will bend or cut you. Hold the base and just push the spike into the ground. Make sure the paddles work.

Eye and ear protection are required at all time and a hat is strongly recommended at the range.

If you live in the West Liberty Iowa area. And you want to shoot airguns or Airgun Field Target or bench rest. . Please consider joining the West Liberty Gun Club.

If you join the West Liberty Gun club you can use the Airgun range, pistol bays, 100 yard range and trap corse anytime the range is open. Unless there is a competition.

Public hours are Saturday and Sunday 1-5 pm.

CHECK THE SCHEDULE!

Public access is sometimes suspended during large competition events.

Report to the range officer building before going to the range.

Club members can shoot from 8am - dusk seven days a week. I will be at the range Saturday mornings.

If you are interested in getting together for Saturday or Sunday morning shooting matches . PM me or Email.

I will provide more details as things progress.

Thank you all for participating and getting the sport of Field Target going in IOWA.

I was at the range today. There are four lanes with three targets. Set from 15-50 yards at random positions. Killzones are 1 1/4 inch.
Shot an 84 shot course missed one . Because I was aiming with my dope card holdover but was nervous I needed to aim high. Well I was aiming high. But aiming higher put a nice 12 o’clock face plate mark on my new target. Just to mock me next time around. Zero wind.
It fell off the regulator at the long target in lane 13. I was waiting for it and it shot the next shot low I realized it and refilled my gun. So those two misses did not count. They were for science.
If I fill to 2800 psi I can shoot 86 shots .

After last weeks very successful shoot I feel like I have completed level 1. The course I have been shooting has the targets set at 15-25-40 yards and is ment for beginners. I have been shooting it two or three times a week and last week I missed one. I’m not going to try again to get 84/84. I missed because I aimed poorly and it’s getting boring . So I’m going to spice it up .
Now it’s 84 shots but I will move the targets and put them in random positions . This is level 2. There are four lanes . Three targets per lane . Two shots per lane. Three loops make 12 lanes. My score card has 14 lanes . So after six lanes the seventh lane is standing. The 14 lane is a kneeling lane. I will not be clearing the course

Tell me the gun is better than the shooter with out telling me the gun is better than the shooter.
All 5 and 5 with the misses being wind four split pellets . Still a miss but it knocked the hole due to wind or me compensating for wind when I did not need to.
But standing and kneeling. I am absolutely terrible. I should throw the gun at the target haha.
But level two of the target range is set. When I shoot the targets I am also aiming at the exact same spot on the paddle to simulate small kill zones. 73 out of 84 with wind random targets and I have never shot off hand or kneeling with this gun. Let’s see some improvement before level three .

I was out at the Field Target range today. It was going to get really hot I did not want to fool around . I had a number of things going on. First I am making a new dope chart that fits inside my scope cap. And it is not quite right. Yesterday I drew it and added a line at the top and it screwed it all up . So I copied it and made a new one. But I did not copy it correctly. So it was just a touch off around 45 yards.
I don’t miss anything from 10-25 yards with an HFT-500 so this week all the targets are set between 28-50 yards.

I did not do any sight in. I did most of that yesterday. I just pulled up. Sat down and started to shoot. You can see my first four lanes I had a problem because my dope card was off. Once I corrected that it was fine. The wind picked up and most everything I missed was because I over compensate for the wind. It just does not make that much difference when it is light. I am always trying to learn to shoot in the wind.
Standing and kneeling are really a problem. I cannot stabilize a ten pound rifle after breaking my shoulder and tearing my rotator cuff. So I definitely need to do some training to build up muscle. I added the hamster and that helped . I hit the 28 yard standing target twice but after that I was done.
