There is a lot of potential for a manufacturer adopting a direct to customer sales model. The middleman margins saved could be diverted/invested towards improved quality (For reduction in after sales service costs) and savings for the customer, both of which may also reduce the need foe sales and marketing expenses. However for this to work better the seller/ manufacturer should be based in the same country as most customers to minimize costs on import, customs duties, freight and foreign exchange.

The businesses who do not pass on savings due to favorable exchange rate movements to customers should also not charge extra in alternative case.
You ask who would do that ?...Now only if I had a few million dollars under the pillow...

G'day,

With respect, consider air gunners in Australia and probably New Zealand too. My wife is just back from a trip to visit her relatives in Northern Wisconsin and took with her a small shopping list for me: three BKL mounts: http://www.bkltech.com/BKl-1-6-Screw-Unitized-Dovetail-Mount-p/bkl-260.htm  - these for my high powered spring rifles.

Note that the advertised price in $US is about $55. In Australia - if one can find an importer/supplier - the last advertised price I saw was $A145.00 each and the same applies more or less to all imported items. As I write the exchange rate is $US1.00 = $A1.25 so the exact value of a BKL mount in $A is 68.75, but there are the 'little' issues of much smaller market size and importing over long distances that raise the selling price to $A145+/- in Australia!!

Mercifully I don't have children otherwise I might have to sell them to fund my addiction to air rifles!

Jim we are also the land of the great ripoff, and not just airguns but most things imported.Small population, low demand, but the mark up on some items just screams profiteering.
I can sell you a couple of my kids cheap if you catch me on the right day and you could onsell at small profit. Here to help. :)

One thing we all need to think about.... Is that new PCP a tool, or a toy?

A good mechanic doesn't buy cheap tools, because his living income is based on their longevity and adaptability. But just how many of us buy a PCP as a tool of the trade? I do, because I shoot at game (mostly pigeons and doves) four to five times a week! Thus, I want a PCP which will hold up to all kinds of rough handling, and still get the job done. In other words, I don't mind paying the premium for a first-class PCP. Would I pay over three G's for a toy which sits in the closet most of the time? No I wouldn't.

So ask yourself... Are you complaining about the cost of a tool, or the cost of a toy?

Alan,
I agree with what you said, but even when it comes to toys, you get what you pay for. I have replaced enough "cheap toys" over the years that even with toys I buy good stuff. Since I do not hunt for food I would have to classify my airguns in the toy VS the ool area. However, my toys do not sit in the closet. I shoot several times a week, some weeks every day. I worked hard over the years and now I feel I can afford to have a few high end toys.

I have only ever gotten one PB that cost over $1000, but I now own three PCPs with hats distinction, two of which are closer to $2000. They perform as I would expect a gun of that class to perform. They are enjoyable to shoot, and I am constantly improving my abilities as I learn the various aspect of each one. I have had other guns, much cheaper, that were had to be tuned and fine tuned then tuned again to shoot properly and still did not hold up to my expectations. They re gone now, but these guns will stay.

However,  do have to agree with the OP, there things are more expensive than they should be.

@ncrary I think you nailed it on the head. It is simply a matter of which Paradigm you are viewing the issue from, and while what Alan said makes sense to that degree Hynzie is absolutely right. Toy or not, prices are getting way out of hand. Then there are some of us that will go ahead and make the investment in the top of the line Tool/Toy only to have issues with it.

Hi Deja,

I don't begrudge any entrepreneur running a small company for an equally small or 'niche' market charging fair prices for his efforts, but I do wonder about the pricing of some items by some vendors who appear to add more than what one would expect to the price for an item. The BKL mounts I mentioned in my first post are one such item, but scope sights are also hit pretty hard over here too.

ya know FX is probably my favorite A G company,, and i own FX Air guns ,,, they are the leader no doubt about it,,there accomplishments are outstanding ,,what bother me so much is i already felt the price was tilted unfairly ,,,before the 16 %increase ,,i know ill continue to purchase FX products at theese huge price increases and sadly they know it too,,,pat

I love our sport but I have to agree that in many cases we are overcharged. The magazines for my RAW and Daystate are 70 to 80 dollars and the ones for my Marauder are 15 bucks. They are just as reliable and I purchased 3 times as many. If you compare airguns to powder burners you can purchase some VERY fine rifles for less than 2000.00! Most of those firearms companies benefit from being able to sell to a bigger market but they also have much higher advertising expenses, ENORMOUS liability insurance and many employees with benefits etc. I understand innovation costs money and machining can get expensive but I have to admit that the cost is getting hard to justify.
