educate me on frangible pellet applications

just saw other post regarding the hades hollow point pellets from JSB. these are frangible pellets, now i can see these working great with soft targets-bird body shots as well as squirrel and chipmunk and rat etc. what concerns me is head shots on squirrels with these. looks like it could end up fragmenting on impact against very tough squirrel skull. as well as other- raccoon, possum and so forth. are my concerns justified?

Most airgun quarry is not thick enough to make these "frangible" pellets work correctly. Im more concerned about accuracy. Im thinking the pellet would be through a bird before it began to open up unless maybe something big like a crow. Same with rabbits. But if it is accurate in your gun then I would try it. But a round nose pellet through the brain is good enough for most airgun critters. These might be better for thicker, tougher, body shots where the fragments could hit more organs.

agree with crittahitta, Matt Dubber did some clay tests (in place of ballistic gel) the one thing they all had in common were the entry was pretty narrow.. and all the action happened a couple inches inside the clay. clay is super dense, so this could compare to maybe 6 inches in if using ballistic gel, so IF you shoot coyotes and hogs.. this might matter, however for small birds and similar.. even a expanding slug will be out on the other side before it start opening up. I would stick to the cheaper regular JSB's or whatever works best in accuracy for your application :)

The Hades are performers. They don't fragment, they do open up. I spined a squirrel yesterday, no pass thru. Doing 727fps/18.65fpe. They act more like a mechanical broadhead. Below are pics of the recovered pellet from the squirrel and an intact pellet. Also ballistic test from Tofazfou shooting them into glycerin soap.

So awesome, thanks for that!

I have found that high velocity will lead to greater expansion at the point of impact. The problem with that though is higher velocity with pellets translates into instability, so accuracy to even hit the target becomes an issue.

A frangible round traveling at 2000+ fps will start coming apart almost at the point of impact of any appreciable media.. The same round moving at 800 fps may not segment at all, and also travel several inches through ballistic gel with no significant deformity.

Soft lead helps though. I have shot dense plastic freezer curtain over steel plate at 30 yards with Crosman Premier HP's and they stopped and expanded after traveleing half an inch through the material. I shot the same target with H&N FTT's and it went deeper through the media with no appreciable expansion.

I shot the same same steel target with lead Crosman HP's. They basically expanded and disintegrated with little witness mark on the steel. I shot the same target with the H&N's, and it left a dent (although I never found those pellets either). Good luck.

Lots of members here shoot pellets at 1000 fps with no problems. I've shot the 50.15 jsb up to 970 and regularly shoot it at 945.

What airgun do you have that fires pellets at 2000fps ? We don't cover powder burners here and pellets are nothing like copper jacketed varmint bullets.
