So I’ve owned many EDgun’s and have never had any issues...until now! The cocking mechanism on the gun stopped functioning!! Yes...I am unable to cock the gun because somehow the cocking bolt got bent and is now jammed! Not sure how this is even possible since the bolt is made of extremely tough steel plus the gun has been very meticulously maintained and never dropped or handled roughly! I sent the cocking mechanism to EdgunWest and he confirmed the bolt was bent and he has been unable to repair (even with heat). The ONLY solution is a complete replacement; however Edgunwest does not carry these in stock and the manufacturer did not make replacement cocking mechanisms for these R5’s. Bottom line - I have $1900 paper weight and I am unable to shoot the gun.



Has anyone else ever had this cocking mechanism issue? Does anyone have recommended solutions?
 
It looks like your options are to send Ed a direct e-mail asking to buy the part, or take your bent part to a competent machinist and have him make you one... I've never heard of the cocking mechanism breaking, they seem fairly bulletproof. I've heard of numerous problems with the R5M cocking mechanism, but the not the single shot versions...

Thanks for the suggestions! I’m just as shocked. These guns are made really well and I’ve never really had any issues or complaints! I’m wondering if I simply got a defective bolt and over time it slowly began to bend until it reached a point where the bolt could no longer slide back and forth. I’ve reached out to Ed and communication has been slow...will keep trying. In the meantime may also look into seeing if a machinist (John Hagan) would willing/able to take this on. Bryan at Edgunwest has been unable to remove the bolt even with heat treatment! The cocking assembly is in perfect condition with no signs of being dropped or damaged, so it’s very hard to say how the bolt could have been bent. The bolt has also never been removed from the assembly. This is probably my most favorite gun to shoot...super accurate and shooting 34gr JSB right at 925...absolute laser and I’m very unhappy I’m unable to shoot the gun! Hopefully a solution is forthcoming!!!!

First you would have to get the bolt out to check and see if it was bent. My guess is that it's not bent but something else. I had mine apart and there is not much that can go south. There is a screw with a type of cap screw head. Mine was very tight which made the bolt really stiff. Surface ground about .010 off the end and all was good. Wish you were closer so I could be more help.

I don’t have the cocking mechanism with me as I’ve sent to Edgunwest, but I believe the bend is about in the center of the bolt. It’s bent just enough so that sliding the bolt back and forth is no longer possible. Bryan has tried to remove the bolt, but looks like he was unsuccessful. The bolt is basically jammed in the cocking mechanism and no amount of silicone grease, Wd40, or heat has worked! Looks like my only option is to request Ed to find or make a replacement! I’ve reached out and explained the issue and offered to pay for a replacement! Hopefully I’ll hear back soon with good news! Will update this thread as soon as I have a solution!!

Metal fatigue/failure is always a possibility in any metal part. All it takes is an air bubble, flaws in the smelting process with a contaminant inside the metal prior to being milled, or just plain unexplained metal fatigue from unknown processes in the manufacturing of the piece.

Every factory has a bin full of "parts" to put the gun together, and you can rest assured that one such part in that bin can have your name on it...IF you can get the attention of the right individual. Perhaps a forum member knows someone at the assembly factory.

Bryan, who will have contact information with Eduard, will certainly take whatever measures you need to obtain a part. Ed has never, to my knowledge, been aware of a defective product that he didn't resolve for the owner.

Patience, Grasshopper....don't panic, this will get fixed.

Hepotter - thanks! You’re right about being patient! Thankfully i have a few other toys i can play with! Since there’s no other logical reason for a bolt to bend, I’m telling myself it’s a rare case of “unexplained metal fatigue from unknown manufacturing processes”!

Ghostalker - will update this thread updated as needed! Right now I have the world’s best looking and most expensive paper weight!

Quick update with great news...for now anyway! I was able to contact Ed and he is going to take at look at the cocking mechanism to determine root cause of the issue. He had Brian at Edgunwest ship the unit to him in Russia so he could assess the issue himself! He will either repair the unit or make a replacement! He is super curious to inspect and figure out the issue as he has never seen this before!! Hopefully I’ll be back in business again soon and enjoying this awesome gun!! It’s very rare when a manufacturer / owner works with a customer like this, so I’m super appreciative to have Ed get involved to solve the issue!!
