EDgun BAT Moderator Review

Hi everyone I am still editing the video review of the BAT Moderator but, I thought I would do the writeup and pictures now so everyone can get their Christmas money ready to spend. I am going to point out the pros and cons and let you be the judge.

  • Pros:
    • Yes it does quiet the muzzle report down by what I and my Apple Watch app says by a third
      • It's as quiet as my quietest rifle (Brocock Bantam Sniper HR with a Donny FL Tanto
    • Provides near perfect alignment with the barrel tension nut
      • There is not any play in the tolerance of the BAT baffle hole that aligns it to the barrel tension nut unlike the plastic baffle hole that has lots of play that can make your shot fly to the left or right
  • Cons
    • Adds 2 inches of length
    • The anodization of the tube is completely different than the rest of the gun and it is substandard. There were flaws such as noticeable light and dark spots and scratches. See the attached photos. Please keep in mind the BAT baffle insert was flawless in it's anodization and the finish was perfect. If the same finish process could be done for the tube it would be so much better
      • Using rubbing alcohol did remove the excess die but still for $150 I would expect better. The finish of the BAT moderator baffle tube should match the rifle just like the stock moderator baffle tube

  • My opinion
    • Even with the finish issues of the BAT baffle tube I still feel this was a worthy upgrade for my EDgun Matador R5M. I would just suggest that Ed address the finish issues of the tube. The baffle insert finish is perfect so I would expect making the tube with the same quality of finish should be an attainable goal.
    • The application of automotive wrap can remedy the bad finish to the BAT moderator tube.

What brand is the gauge you have on the gun? As it isn't the OEM electronic unit.

It’s a Wika gauge, I had Brian at EDgun West swap out the OEM EDMU before shipping it. Where I do my shooting is rugged as hell with huge temperature swings. As a Systems Engineer for the military I’ve seen my fair share of electronics spontaneously dying because of manufacturing/design issues or just the proverbial “poop happens”. Hence the reason I don’t own a Daystate Redwolf. (People are going to be pissed when those capacitors start to die!) I just don’t want any electronic do-dad’s going bad on me in the field.

I think you did a good job of covering all of the bases 👍. The finish doesn't bother me too much personally, but my Lelya isn't setup as an ugly hunter and it isn't nearly as eye appealing as your R5M! I'd also say the extra couple of inches isn't out of line with the Lelya, although it does change the aesthetic a bit.

Also, special attention needs to be focussed on the barrel tension nut. If it comes loose during moderator installation or removal, you have to barely snug it back down or it'll really screw up accuracy. I'm glad that I was able to correct this with my Lelya recently - the accuracy problems arose when I installed the Bat, and coincidentally went away when I reinstalled the factory moderator. You can imagine where my suspicions were pointing to that day!

Nice review of the moderator. Your critique will likely not be taken seriously by Ed, as long as the moderator does what its supposed to he could care less how it looks.

Thank you. As with all of my reviews it is to honestly inform people of the good, bad, and the ugly no matter how bad someone gets their shorts in a twist. Hopefully Ed will do something but, if not everyone now knows what they are getting in to if they want to buy a BAT moderator.

I have the long version so not exactly the same. However after stuffing the shroud with foam and felt it was much quieter without using the BAT. So quiet even if I shot .25 MK2 heavies at 880 fps I don't think anyone even 10 yards away would think it was a air rifle, sounds like a puff of air. That is when I shot the pellet into the air. You have to have a quiet target or the sound of impact will be noticed.

Ed really hit a home run with the large volume of the offset moderator!

Mine lands today along with the WIKA Gauge for my beautiful Lelya. Great review and i agree about the finish, i think Ed will address that issue. On a side note, the EDMU is a BUST and although the idea was great its just POO and Ed should just do away with it, Thank you for this wonderful review. how difficult is it to put the automotive wrap?

It wasn’t difficult at all. You just clean the tube, stick it on with a little overlap, shrink it with a heatgun, and then trim the excess.
