Well, I finally got around to trying dust devils in my Umarex Commander.. I had high hopes, if it worked I was planning on making a modified IDPA target - steel over wood for the bulk of the target (thunk) and a cutout with a 1/4" steel plate for the 5 ring (clang). But alas. I had major jamming/feeding issues. Booo hooohoooo.

Aye, the same sintering process that allows them to '''dustify" makes them less than round, hence the jams.

Working around (pun intended) the jams, accuracy is less as well.

Might be good in revolvers that use the dummy cartridges, but spring fed magazines catch the edges of the devil, and create hangups and jams.

I did use the low ricochet bb's in the past, but they too return @ you in steel.

Straight bb's, shooting cardboard silhouette shapes , are much safer, but don't give the satisfying 'ring' when hit, and have to be replaced periodically to detect hits ( or misses) .Some spray paint over the cardboard's holes extends the life of the target, but wont last like ringing steel will.. pellets can be acceptable but most replica pellet handguns suffer from poor trigger pull, and sloppy magazines, as well as being gas hogs with your CO2.

Welding shield, heavy clothes and gloves, while using standard bb's isis option for those willing to take a hit, but most ranges won't allow you to do so

Buy a cheap, plastic trash can and place it upside down on the ground (open side down). Take a boxcutter and cut a square hole in one side of it slightly smaller than the size of your paper target. Punch a hole in the center of the bottom (now the top) and dangle a bell or steel plate in the center of the can directly behind the hole you cut. Tape a target over the hole. Shoot the center of the target and ring the bell/plate.

We use this system at our club for kids and it works well. As long as you shoot from about 10 yards away and hit the target paper, you hear a "tink" and the bbs are captured inside the can. If you miss and hit the plastic can, the bounceback is modest. Always use eye protection (Ralphie) and have fun.

The cans can be nested for storage.
