Dreamline Classic .177, A Purpose Pre-Charged Pneumatic (PCP)

Hello AirgunNation Peoples,

All my PCP’s have a specific purpose. Some are walk and stalk airguns, some are for the bench, but my Dreamline Classic .177 is especially for small pest elimination. Small pest elimination at distances anywhere between 15 to 35 yards discreetly and quietly around the yard.

My current reigning champion for this task (backyard pest elimination) is my Vortek SHO tuned Air Arms Pro-Sport .177 / Walnut. This spring powered airgun is noted for being the “best looking production spring piston airgun ever made” airgun legend Terry Doe. With it’s high grade Lothar Walther barrel over the years mine has plugged 75 to 100 squirrels right in the think-box.

So, the question remains... Can my FX Dreamline Classic .177 (PCP) be a good substitute now and again as good as my finely tuned AA Pro-Sport .177 (Springer) at the average 25 yard distance?

Only one way to find out.. Have a 10 shot group 25 yard group size shoot out. LET’S GO!!

The airguns, ammo, and speeds/energies.

Now, down to the nitty-gritty the 25 yard setup and 10 shoot groups, same distance as my feeder.

The Pro-Sport .177 went first.

The Dreamline Classic .177 was next.

Next, I went out to photo the groups and noticed I had a little spectator.

Anyways here are the groups.

The Air Arms Pro-Sport .177’s 10 shot group measured (widest center-to-center) 0.84 inches from 25 yards.

Well, the results are in and it seems that the differences are null and void. A 0.04 inch difference in group size isn’t going to matter much on a 25 yard headshot squirrel. So, absolutely yes my .177 PCP is more than welcome to share the purpose of backyard pest elimination with the .177 Springer. I’m very pleased!

That’s a nice setup you have there! And that’s a very respectable group with the Prosport. However I think you may not have found the Dreamline’s favorite pellet yet :) Of course it’s cranking out the JSB Monsters at over 900fps so you’d need to back down the power a bit to broaden the range of suitable pellets so I can understand why you may not choose to bother. But I bet if you did, you could cut the group size in half or better.

Yes, indeed Nervoustrig, I actually have since tuned back the Dreamline Classic .177 to shoot those JSB Monster 13.43 grain at 890ft/s for 23 fpe and I am liking the results a little better. It also likes the Air Arms Diabolo Field 10.3 grains as well. For my purposes I prefer the heavier .177 ammo. Thanks for your input, much appreciated!

I think your looking at this the wrong way.

Think not what you can do for your Dreamline, Think what your Pro Sport can do for you.

Or in other words, If the Pro Sport does the job, what better excuse do you need to shoot such a beautiful Rifle.

either way, thanks for showing

ps, did any one get the election day political reference, just a bit of fun, not proclaiming a favourite.

Sounds good! Either one will zip right through a squirrel’s fuse box at those power levels so no doubt that will prove a successful recipe.

FWIW I have settled on a 12fpe PCP with wadcutters (RWS Supermags) for back yard squirrel duty. Such a sedate shot cycle that’s super quiet for back-to-back opportunities that arise. They’ll hit an aspirin-sized string of Mardi Gras beads at 30 yards 10 out of 10 times and they deliver a devastating impact whether to the brain or the heart/lung area.

Nice comparison. I honestly did not expect the springer to shoot that good:) It looks to me you have mixed 2 types of pellets in that JSB monster tin? Some looks like the JSB re-design, and some looks like the regular.

Thanks! But the pellets to my knowledge, are all the same bro. Lol, I see what you’re talking about though, from the picture maybe the JSB factory accidentally put a few in there. Indeed AA Pro-Sports are a forgotten gem!

I get the election day humor, lol! Appreciate it!

I’ll have to try that Mardi Gras bead target! I have plenty of those, sounds fun! I love .177’s many times they have cleaner put downs than my .25 calibers. Lights out quick and easy.

Joe, wonderful post! Luv that battle and to see the AA Pro Sport hold its own against your tack driving Dreamline at that distance says a lot about that springers history! Both are well suited to the job you have for them

Yessir Ranchibi! I liked it so much I was compelled to purchase a second Pro-Sport in .22 and it loves Predator GTO’s 11.75 grain. It’s neck and neck with the .177.

That's fantastic! Was this "straight out of box" or did you have to tinker with it? As you may know my WC in .177 was a horrible experience. I have it shooting about that good or better now. It absolutely loves the 4.52 head size H/N Barracudas, go figure! It shoots the Monsters now just about as good as what your groups show.

There where not any major issues out-of-box for my .177 Dreamline Classic. All I have done was initially patch-worm cleaned the 500mm STX liner/barrel, added two after market barrel bands, and re-tuned the regulator and hammer-spring settings to my preferences. Glad you have gotten your .177 WC sorted! An accurate .177 for small jobs is a great caliber to own, sometimes it’s all the airgun that’s needed.
