Doe down in FL

So, my teenage son finally shot his first deer. Came close last year but didn’t finish the deal. This year was much better and even though the deer probably wasn’t as good, the satisfaction of finally putting one on the ground is fantastic.

We don’t generally have large deer, so this one is probably a normal to slightly small doe. I guessed her to be 90 lbs but not 100% sure on that.

The shot was taken from 50 yards with an AF Texan .457 and the deer ran about 100 yards and piled up in some thicket. The shot was perfect and we recovered the slug under the skin on the opposite side. It was an NSA 348 grain BT HP and it decimated quite a bit of flesh on its way through. Wish we didn’t lose any meat but it did quite a bit of damage. Still lots of good meat left and some good memories.

I posted about our hunt last year on the same night, a year ago, when he went to shoot and had the safety on. Then he couldn’t find the deer again in his scope because he had turned the magnification to 14x and he missed his opportunity to shoot.
We talked about that and he made sure not to repeat those mistakes this year.
He gutted, skinned and quartered it all himself as well. I’ll cut it all up later this week, but he is a good, hard working kid, turning into a man.

Here’s what the NSA knurled 348 grain .457 hp looked like when we found it lodged in the opposite side of the hide.

That’s some good looking expansion. I may have to try those myself. Did it hit any ribs or other bone?

Yeah, that bullet broke a couple ribs on its way through.

And doesn’t appear to have fragmented much at all. I can’t see the other side of the mushroom, but it looks to be intact all the way around. That’s the type of ammo I want to try. Thanks for sharing pics and info about the slug.

After reading this again I realized how stupid it looks. By “fragmented” I meant that it doesn’t look like significant pieces of the expanded portion of the hollow point broke off of the slug along the way through the wound channel, particularly after hitting bone. Sorry if my wording caused any confusion.

edit: wanted to clear up confusing wording.

I went and took another picture so you could see the bottom of the slug. It does look like one pedal broke off.
