Diseased birds

We falconers see this on occasion with poorly cared for Birds of Prey (Usually with uninformed, ill-equipped Rehabbers) and in other domesticated captive birds. Falconers have our own language of old going back 4000 years. As such we call this "Bumblefoot" but clinically it is termed "Ulcerative Pododermatitis." It is a bacterial infection and inflammatory reaction usually Staph (Staphylococcus aureus) in origin. Depending on the staging. We treat it with antibiotics and sometimes necessary lancing of the affected bulbous lesions. Somewhat unusual seeing this in wild in contrast to captive held birds or other husbandry animals such as rodents, but it certainly occurs.
