I think a lot of us tend to stick with domes for hunting, just because we know they're accurate, further out, and retain their energy downrange better too.
These are apples-to-apples comparisons, too. All shot from the same gun, at the same distance, on the same animal, in the same part of the animal. All .177 from my Marauder, with stock tune.
Here's a head shot impact with a CPH at about 17 FPE. You can see that it just sails right through and doesn't rock the head back much with impact force. Seems like his head barely slowed the pellet. :
Check the slo-mo impact at 2:09 in this video; that's a SuperMag head shot. (14-15 FPE) It's a big meat slap and rocks the head back, even in the little .177:
Lastly, here's one with the Crow Magnum. (15 FPE) Rocked his head back, expanded to .25 cal., and he instantly had that blank stare that means lights. out. That pellet went in the top of the skull and was recovered against the membrane that separates the heart/lung area from the dirty guts.
I switched back to CPHs today, but only because I'm after a problem raccoon, and the Crow Magnum and SuperMags won't have the penetration I need on this big guy, except with a perfect head shot.
The wadcutter and hollow points hit like sledgehammer, compared to the domes. Might as well take advantage of it, if you're after smaller game at shorter distances. It also minimizes damage to the backstop or whatever lies beyond the target, in case of a miss or pass-through.
Just thought it might be useful, in case there's someone else out there who has a backyard pest gun and doesn't need a long reach.
