Differing impacts of different pellet types

I think a lot of us tend to stick with domes for hunting, just because we know they're accurate, further out, and retain their energy downrange better too.

These are apples-to-apples comparisons, too. All shot from the same gun, at the same distance, on the same animal, in the same part of the animal. All .177 from my Marauder, with stock tune.

Here's a head shot impact with a CPH at about 17 FPE. You can see that it just sails right through and doesn't rock the head back much with impact force. Seems like his head barely slowed the pellet. :

Check the slo-mo impact at 2:09 in this video; that's a SuperMag head shot. (14-15 FPE) It's a big meat slap and rocks the head back, even in the little .177:

Lastly, here's one with the Crow Magnum. (15 FPE) Rocked his head back, expanded to .25 cal., and he instantly had that blank stare that means lights. out. That pellet went in the top of the skull and was recovered against the membrane that separates the heart/lung area from the dirty guts.

I switched back to CPHs today, but only because I'm after a problem raccoon, and the Crow Magnum and SuperMags won't have the penetration I need on this big guy, except with a perfect head shot.

The wadcutter and hollow points hit like sledgehammer, compared to the domes. Might as well take advantage of it, if you're after smaller game at shorter distances. It also minimizes damage to the backstop or whatever lies beyond the target, in case of a miss or pass-through.

Just thought it might be useful, in case there's someone else out there who has a backyard pest gun and doesn't need a long reach.

I was hunting in .177 calibre and .22 both air rifles PCP . When I was hunting .177 , used JSB Heavy pellets also H&N Baracuda Hunter. Better to use pellets such as H&N Baracuda Hunter, because they have very nice knock down effect. Domes are flying away with the energy and knothing happens, helps only head shots. Started to hunt with .22 JSB domes and found out that I shoot dove and nothing happens to them. They fly away! I have 1.03 grammes with speed of 275 m/s. And they do not have knock down effect. All energy goes away with pellet. I think to take a knife and make cuts on head of JSB domes to make them more lethal.

Nice video, einar. The "ballistic soap" is a great idea! I wonder if you shot through it the long way, if it would still go through all the way... The one reviewer from the UK, big dude, used cheaper soap, but taped maybe 10 of them back to back so the pellet wouldn't get all the way through. That's kind of expensive, but then at least one has a nice big supply of soap to use in the shower after the testing. ;)

This pellet seems like a good compromise between ultimate ballistic coefficient and a hollow point for some expansion.

In the video, you said that it needs to be shot at 300m/s for good expansion. That is VERY fast, 986 fps. Not a lot of guns will shoot it that fast without really dialing up the power. I'd have to do a power tune on my Marauder, for example, which usually shoots 10.5 gr. pellets at 875 fps. (267 m/s) But some expansion is better than none, and enough penetration to get to the vitals is better than not enough, because the focus was too much on expansion.

I'm going to try those H&N Baracuda Hunters in my next order.
