Difference between —Quick Detach Mounts —and Regular Mounts?

Is there much of a difference between Quick Detach Mounts (QD) and Regular Mounts? ​

I get the basic difference:
● To mount/unmount a QD I don't need an allen wrench.
For a regular mount, I do need Allen's help.
● And if the QD is a nice lever, it's a very quick operation — whereas Allen takes his time rotating several times around his axis until he screws up (or bolts up) the picatinny brackets.....


But beyond that...: Is there any other difference?
▪ A difference in tightness and stability?
▪ A difference in height? (I noticed that QD are usually not among the lowest mounts available.)

It has a lot to do with quality. But what I appreciate with a good QD mount is I can effectively torque the unit exactly the same amount, every mount, without a torque wrench. So in principle it should be easy to get exactly the same fit and alignment, every time.

Primarily I use QD mounts from ADM and Scalarworks. They're very reliable. I have a few other "random" QD mounts, like a laser pointer from o-light, and it's far less reliable (from the perspective of zeroing), between mounts. That said, the QD mount that comes with the Infiray thermal scopes is very solid and reliable.

I have only a few scopes that I swap between guns, so QD mounts are really nice time-saver. A good one that maintains its zero between mounts is a bigger plus.

I have an ADM mount and a red dot that I swap back and forth on a rimfire. I don't remember having to re-tweek the scope when I make the switch.

I had inexpensive qd mounts when I had one scope that 2 rifles shared. I was amazed at how it "held zero". I use high rings so I'm not sure about qd's that are lower. I think I still have them (30mm) if you want to try them. You pay shipping. PM me.

With my ATN QD mount, if I take the scope off and put the scope back on the gun at a later time, it holds zero to within about 1 MOA if you tighten the QD screws to the same tightness. I even switch back and forth between guns.

I have Eagle Vision QD on 3 of my scopes I move around on my two guns depending on the discipline I'm shooting. Love the quick and easy option.

I wanted to make sure I wasn't missing anything before I scratched the QD mounts of my shopping list and replaced them with regular mounts... —
because that gives me so many more choices when looking for really low mounts.

Good question. I have seen many people use them, but I wondered how often they are used for extreme precision.

They are one thing I have stayed alway, because I don’t have a need to remove and remount. But also, because even for great quality mounts, it is hard for me to believe it always comes right back to the exact same POI. Sure I can adjust, but I don’t want to have to.

I think until recently I have never had enough guns and scopes to really make any scope switches that aren't going to be for a long time.

But I count myself blessed to be able to do so now — that's why the question of QD mounts even came up for me.


All I want is to be able to switch a light short scope out for a long and heavy one, depending on the shooting scenario I expect for the day. Or, in the future, switch out a night vision scope (or clip-on).


● I understand that perfect precision cannot be attained.
So when I make the switch and I need perfect precision I will take a couple shots to assure my zero is where it should be — or adjust it.
But once I start keeping notes on my scope positions a switch won't require a large target paper at close range — I can check my zero on a small target at 50y easily.


● And I wanted to make sure I didn't throw out all my non-QD mounts unless they wouldn't be suitable to scope switching. Which turns out not to be true.

So: Question answered. Thanks!

➔ I will keep my non-QD mounts (I always have allen keys with me anyhow).
➔ And I will note down my scope positions on different rails in my notes in Strelok Pro and my Gun Notes so I can make switches between scopes easily.
