RWS Diana RWS 48- Inconsistent Velocity

I got a chance to install the original spring (Vortek piston and breech seal).
Below are the chrony reading with the exact same setup as before:
(H&N FTT 14.66g)
1. 732 FPS
2. 742
3. 743
4. 738
5. 736
6. 718
7. 717
8. 727
9.724
10.729

The rifle isn't as jumpy as it was when I had the vortex spring and it would also pull hard to the left after each shot which affected the accuracy.
After reinstalling the original spring, I noticed the rifle less jumpy.

The image below is my target at 50 feet away. The Beeman Eco series-Kodiak 12.65g perform the best.

That’s a lot better. Also makes me think the piston seal might be a little tight. You were trying to de-tune it anyway, you could run it as is through a tin of pellets and see how it does. Try some JSB 13.43 in it as well.
I run JSB 18.1’s in mine.
I wonder if running a heavier pellet makes the piston seal “work harder” … thinking this might help to break it in a bit faster?

Close to 18fpe....thats better 👍

Sounds like you were experiencing action 'torque' with the previous spring (with it kicking to left). Should be less pronounced with a rotating piston, as long as the seal fits nicely/ is run in/ spring ends are polished/ your running with a top hat/ everything is correctly lubed.

You can't change the physics of the recoil acceleration that will happen as a result of running a heavy mainspring (required to get that heavy Diana piston moving) but you can still tune for a sweet cycle if you balance out the surge (bounce).

Once the seals bedded in, I'd personally run the JSB RS and heavies over the chrony, the results will tell if you need to add or remove preload, or piston weight. The efficiency (power) will suffer when a set up is either bouncing or slamming too much, but when you find the sweet spot....... 👌

I’m still new to springers, but it’s great to find forums like this where people take the time to offer helpful advice. For now I’m happy with how the rifle performs. My next order will be a variety pack of pellets to see which ones the D48 likes best. I'm sure she will settle nicely after the piston seal breaks in. I'm hoping to get smoother/quieter shot cycle after going through the remaining JSB 18.13g pellets 😁.

When properly tuned these guns have a wonderful shot cycle, but it’s never going to be quiet or gentle. Too much mass moving at a high rate of speed for that. But, very solid with no buzz or twang is possible. They’re at their best doing what they’re designed to do, which is make power with excellent accuracy. Plenty of guns in the 12’ish FPE range, I see no reason to neuter one that wasn’t designed for it. Things are trending in the right direction so just keep shooting and get acquainted with the gun. Run the seal in for a tin or so then if you want smoother and quieter go to a full power Vortek or ARH spring with a fitted guide and let the big dog eat. You’ll be amazed.

If you think the 48 is violent try shooting a hatsan 135 in .22 that the vortec air spring has been over pressurized.😡 It recoils forward so hard it smacks my trigger finger and it stings. My 48 with a vortex spring kit in it is sweet to shoot especially in comparison to the 135.
I have one and I love it. Feels like a .223. Don't want to try it over pressured. Can’t anyway because the gas ram needs replacing.
