Diana 56 - Vortek - incredible

One of my most fun spring rifles in my collection to shoot from the bench is a Diana 56TH. At my request, Tom at Vortek made a custom spring kit for it, bringing the power down to 14.5 fpe, shooting the 18 grain AA Diablo Field Heavy at 603 fps, with as SD of 1fps over 30 shots. It is a joy to cock, quiet and extremely smooth at the shot, with virtually no recoil noticeable at the gun or through the scope.

Below is a 10 shot group fired this morning from my 18 yard indoor range, less than .20 C-t-C.

10 shots no less. Got to be on your best benchrest game don't ya. Some time ago here on AGN I viewed with interest someone rebuilding a 56 with a kit from the UK. If I remember correctly, it involved sleaving the compression tube and bringing the power down very low. Checked my bookmarks but don't see it. Kind of a shame that Diana feels the 56 needs so much power when all it does is screw up the cocking and firing behavior. I'd really like to have one but it seems kind of unusable out of the box.

Johnny, for clarification, the ES was 5, the SD was 1. Out-of-the-box. The FPE was in the 22 range if I remember correctly. That is why they crush so many scopes without tuning. The cycle was really violent.

Thanks Man. I need to look up 22 fpe velocity for that pellet.

Here is one for the RWS 48. I couldn't find one for the 52. The one above is for the RWS 54.

That was nice of you! Looks to be about 740fps. Must be a big improvement for you, cool.

Thank you, Glen. It is not that I am so good, I just have the opportunity to shoot a lot. I never take for granted how fortunate I am to have two indoor ranges and an outdoor range, plus a career that affords me the financial capacity and time to shoot at least 50 to 100 pellets most days of the year, at any time day or night. Couple these circumstances with a very nice collection of pcp and spring powered rifles, and the opportunity to learn a lot through experience and learning from others on this great forum, and one should be fairly proficient.

I owe much to guys like Scott Schneider at Motorhead who taught me early on that less speed and power is often “more” in the Airgun world, Matt Dubber, and Odoyle who is always sharing terrific information.

Lol. Make all the excuses you want for that excellence......

I have 3 indoor ranges (two at work), an outside range that goes up to 45 yards, I have a career that affords me any enjoyment I want and the time to do it, I put AT LEAST 50 pellets down range every day (I often put well over 16,000 pellets per year through a few guns), I even shoot at the indoor ranges at work. I have some excellent springers as well as firearms.......I still dont shoot like that my friend. You're just making me feel bad....lol

That's a great group. D54s and D56s are great guns in untuned form in my opinion. I have never shot a group as small as this but most of my groups with the Dianas are one hole meaning the pellet impacts are touching - not that they went into the same hole. I do more plinking than shooting groups and I have hit small objects like bottle caps at 50 - 75 yards consistently.

bdzjlz,

I just got a Diana 52 and am installing a Macarri kit (full power). What fps was your 56 shooting the 18 grain AA Diablo Field Heavy at before the spring kit install?

Can you really live with a mega ES of ONE, unbearable?

18 grains yeilds 22 fpe when?

sqrt((450240 * 22) / 18) = 741.817 feet per second.

450240 is a magic number, just memorize it.

22 is fpe

18 is weight in grains

output is in feet per second

Always works as it is derived from the equation to calculate fpe using velocity (fps) and weight (gr).

Thank You Sir. I usually use ChairGun and routinely memorize important phone numbers.
