Diana 460 magnum accuracy problems

I've owned the Diana 460 magnum and 470 TH, they're basically the same gun with different stocks. Both shot the H&N 14.66 grain Field Target Trophy the best. The scope Yo recommended, LEUPOLD VX FREEDOM 3-9x EFR AO, is a good one and is what I put on my springers. What I liked about the 460 was the open sights. This gives you the option of yanking the scope off when one is chasing Zero, to see if it's the scope or is it you! I went through 4 scopes on these guns before getting the Leupold's, They are wicked on scopes not designed for a springer!

Mine would shoot quarter sized groups at 30 yards all day long and sometimes I'd get the elusive dime! I killed many a ground squirrel at 50+ yards with them. They pack a wallop!

Good luck.

Same here. Not with a 470 but I still own a 460 and it is as accurate as you describe. Maybe he got a bad one. Maybe (probably) it's a scope issue. JMO

I bet his scope won't adjust parallax to 25 yards, as it is from a . 308 combo kit.

Yes, parallax will lick you in the axe.

Parallax is not adjustable on this scope

That can account for some of your inaccuracy. If you don't position your eye in the same exact place behind the scope every time you shoot accuracy will suffer.

Wow, if I knew there was so much importance in parallax adjustment, I wouldn’t have even thought to put this scope on it. You guys are awesome, thanks for the input!

there is still the small issue of scope replacement. I can’t afford to use a leupold. It’s just WAY out of my price range. I can’t spend more than $150 on a scope (the whole reason I installed the current one, it was free!) is there anything in my price range that would work? I’ve looked at the hammers scopes that say ‘magnum springer rated’ all over them, or I’ve heard decent things about leapers.
any suggestions?

This is just ME and even though the Vortex Crossfire2 Deadhold BDC 4-12x40AO isn't specifically Magnum Airgun Springer Rated and IF I were strapped for cash with under $200 ($189) to spend that's where my money would be spent and I did call Vortex about it and the reply was they're confident even though it's not specifically stated as a magnum airgun rated scope it's backed with the best lifetime warranty in the business for added piece of mind and consumer confidence. The scope is pretty DAMN clear Matter of fact even CLEARER than my Vortex Diamondback Tactical side focus 6-24x50 that cost MORE THAN DOUBLE the price AT $399!!! IMHO! Yo!

I have put my scope that was on the 460 onto another rifle so it is now shooting open sights. My vision is not what it once was but the gun still hits what I aim at. If my vision was clearer for the open sights I'm sure it would be even better. The 460 is certainly a "magnum" springer with the movement that comes along with such but it shoots very well and is a gun that I will keep and rely on. I also have an HW97 and, contrary to what others have said, I find the build quality of the Diana to be in line with the HW97. Different in a way but comparable in my eyes. JMO, from an owner of both.

I took your advice and looked at the vortex scope. I then emailed them to ask about it. They promptly emailed me back confirming it IS rated for magnum springers, and they are confident it will work to my liking.
Thankyou for your help. I truly hope this solves my problems, and it’s not just me being an absolutely terrible shot 😬

So after emails back and forth with vortex, and reconditions from them on where to buy, I settled on the 4-12x40 ao crossfire 2 from A&A optics. I called them before hand to find out how long shipping would take (after waiting almost a month for pyramid air to deliver my rifle, I didn’t want to go through that again!) a REAL person answered the phone first time and gave me all the info I needed.
promptly orders it, so now he waiting begins. Thank you all for your help and recommendations. Meanwhile, I’ll be pulling the scope off and trying some open sights shooting this weekend!

Quick update......

took the scope off today and did some shooting open sights at 18yds. Under 1” groups consistently and no poi shift. Was definitely a scope issue. After reading up about parallax, I’m pretty positive this was the issue, and the scope probably isn’t damaged. Shame to just have a scope sitting around, but I can see how unusable it is without adjustable objective.
now to shoot open sighted till my vortex comes in on Wednesday!!
