Delta Wolf in Factory mode

100 shots with DW .25 shooting JSB 33.95 at 50 yards, target velocity was 880fps, winds variable at 5 mph. Saw a big change in regulator pressure taking the gun from my basement at 68F to my shooting bench at 88F; 174 bar to 157 bar. In factory mode the DW wants to see 170 bar and instructions say to be within 5 bar os this. I proceeded to shoot anyway being 13 bar off since I didn’t want to change anything until I understood the temperature effect.

Targets are 3”. As you can see it took a full magazine to get close and by the end of the second magazine it was shooting very well (for me anyway).

PART TWO

Few days later I increased regulator to get within 5 bar per the manual. Here are two 10 shot groups that show improvement in the factory mode algorithm getting up to the target velocity of 880 fps. I am very happy with the hardware accuracy but think the Day State software guys need to work on the factory algorithm to achieve target velocity much faster.

On the subject of needing software tweaks, does anyone know exactly how software updates are going to work?

I hope it's not a case of having to send it in to the techs for something that should be as simple as plugging in the USB or using the Bluetooth module.

I've been told one of the reasons they made it impossible to do software updates yourself on the old airwolf MVT was to stop UK and other power restricted guys from potentially trying to flash their guns to FAC mode. Hopefully they've got a more elegant way of preventing that this time around.

That is odd. Mine took 6 shots and then shots 6-11 of the mag were within 4fps of set velocity. Possibly luck but I'll check and feedback once I actually get a chance to use the gun. I was basically just setting my 0.22 hp down in power from how it came from the factory (63fpe) so I could check everything was working properly and get it ready to pellet test.

I will say their recommended reg pressures make zero sense to me and look like they were simply lifted from old, direct from the bottle mct maps or something, as the guns are easily capable of reaching the required velocities at much lower reg pressures and are seemingly way more consistent that way (have a few mates that have been using and testing theirs a lot more than I have).

I have exchanged messages with a few DW owners and found that the regulator temperature sensitivity and factory mode performance I am seeing is not unique to my gun. I don’t know if there have been any software updates since I got it in Feb. The paper work showed that it was tested at the factory in 8/20.

If the gun would remember what it learned in factory mode I would be reasonably happy but it starts all over again when power is cycled. Surely that is an easy software fix.

Very interested in how yours does and I also EXPECT to be able to do my own software updates. I can put up with a lot but not needless shipping of my gun across the country.

From the test date, it's POSSIBLE that a newer software version is available. I didn't think that AoA shipped any before we got the newest software. It DOES sound like it needs updating. They really normally find the velocity within 5 shots and should keep it within 10fps. More than 100 fps from target is considered to be an error in the algorithm, so that could be why it's struggling in your first test. Big question is why is it more than 100 fps different. You definitely should reach out to AoA.

On the reg pressure, it seems the logic is to use one that will cover all the power levels in that caliber. Mine is one of the first 2 in the country, so is slightly different than what is being shipped now. Factory mode works fine on it but I never use it because of the reg pressure recommendations and pellet waste to find velocity. It also should save your last velocity parameters unless you switch modes or change something .

On yours for 880 fps, a 155 bar reg, 2900 dwell, and 76v should be close. Tweak this to be exact. If it is not close... again... contact AoA.

As far as I know , only AoA and myself have the bootloader to update software . This will change almost certainly as it all evolves but DS is being slow to include us in some of the most current improvements. Believe me... they are being pushed and working hard on all of this.

Patience will help on the updates but reach out to AoA if it really seems to be malfunctioning.

My .25 shoots great with the .25 King Heavy at about 875 FPS in Advanced Mode. It’ll keep the gun within an ES of about 12 FPS, very similar to my Red Wolf HP. So at an average of 875 FPS with high usually 881 and low around 868 or 869 FPS. In factory mode I’m getting within 10 FPS as stated above, but that is plus or minus 10 FPS, sometimes a bit more. And it takes at least 5 shots in Factory Mode when turned on to get back to programmed speed. In Advanced it only takes one or two shots to get up to speed.

On Advanced I have my reg at 150 bar when it’s about 70 degrees out and when shooting when it’s hot it will dip down to the low 140s. But the GCU will keep up with the decrease and compensate so pellet speed isn’t negatively affected. Voltage at 78.5 vdc and Dwell at 3400 microseconds.

The gun is Competition Accurate for Benchrest and Extreme Field Target. I’ll be shooting it this Summer at RMAC and EBR, all events except for the Slug event at RMAC since my Delta Wolf doesn’t like slugs. ANY slugs. Hopefully JSB will start making the real King Heavy pellets again sometime soon..

Thanks for the suggestions. I have also played around with the advanced settings (tweaking the one provided by AOA) and have been using 3100 micro seconds, 80 V, and 160 bar. Getting ~1” groups at 80 yards but want to do better. I’ll also try the settings you suggested as I would like to bring the regulator pressure down.

To be clear to everyone, I really like the gun and am enjoying the learning curve but was hoping to have more access to the computer to extract data. My thought was to use factory mode to zero in on good settings then plug those numbers into advanced mode; hoping Bluetooth app will include such capability.

If anything I have learned patience over the past year and will happily shoot away while waiting.

Centercut,

Thanks for the suggested settings and I’ll try those along with the one Arzrover sent. Since your initial advice I have advanced mode working well by blowing off an empty chamber and then usually get first shot accuracy.

I was under the impression that the electronics weren’t doing anything in advanced mode other than displaying velocity. Is the GCU actively managing regulator pressure in advanced mode?

Is the direction to be within 5 bar of the guns “target” pressure unnecessary?

Yes, in Advanced mode the chrony is only functioning to display speed, and is not part of the feedback algorithm. But the gun does act as does a Red Wolf so as input pressure changes, the dwell changes with a pre-programmed algorithm as does the Red Wolf. So you're basically shooting the Red Wolf with a built in regulator to keep the pressure feed to the GCU relatively constant. I've done the same thing with my .177 Pulsar FT gun ( I call it my Alpha Wolf) by installing a Huma reg in the tube set at 150 bar. It keeps the pressure to the GCU very constant and I can shoot a 90 shot string with an ES of approx 6 or 7 FPS. Now if only I had the motivation to practice off hand for Field Target... ;(

@ Centercut

"Since my Delta Wolf doesn’t like slugs. ANY slugs".

Do you think it would be the same for a .22 ?

No, I think the .22 will shoot slugs well, more than likely the lighter ones like the Daystate Howlers (20.2 gr) or NSA 20.2 gr or even the JSB KO 25.4 grain. I am not sure if it will shoot the heavier slugs well, although the 27 grain H&N may also shoot well. I am basing this on the DW barrel being similar to the .22 ART barrel in the Red Wolf, and my RW likes those slugs mentioned in the previous sentence. I would like to say that I have "heard" that some .25 DW shoot slugs well, but I have never actually seen it and mine doesn't. I've heard that the DW shoots the 29 grain NSA at 900ish FPS very well in a friend's gun, but unless I actually see it I'm skeptical based on my own experience...

@Centercut

Apologies for being thick but how are these two statements compatible ?
