It may be a thing, I saw a YT VIDEO a month or so back. I can't remember the guys name but he is custom building air rifles. Search 82 caliber air rifle on YT and you should find it. He is charging the rifle with compressed helium to get 30 to 40 % more power. Fair warning he is building the rifle to sustain that much power I wouldn't trust our compressed air guns to handle that kind of force.
 
Is this one of the “air cartridge” rifles? I read they developed cartridges that were charged with a pump or tank, so were individually charged. Apparently this was a thing in Britain a while back, very controversial, a bunch of weird laws exist about them there. Seems a .50 cal replica cartridge at 3000 psi might be a self contained unit? Replicas with .22 cal pellets were shooting at 400-450 FPS.
