I have the short version of the FieldPod, and I've found it to be a bit of a nuisance. The rests, as alluded to above, aren't very adaptable especially when using a bottled airgun. The rear rest broke on mine as well, but fortunately, I did manage to get a replacement from Midway USA.
Blackdiesel's idea of using Delrin is a good one, but I don't think you'd need a machinist as Delrin is easy to work with. The only drawback is, it "snatches" badly when being drilled, so you do have to clamp down work pieces to the pallet while drilling. Other than that, woodworking tools work well if you go slow.
