i have been working on project to build an " in the barn" air rifle that I can shoot pigeons at about 10 yards that will not shoot through the metal roof. I tried the Benjamin 392 but pumping it is a pain and the gun just isn't accurate enough for me to place clean kill shots.

I ve got a HW 30 coming from AOA this week but I am concerned that it's going to still be a little to much power. While I'm a little reluctant to mess with a new gun I do know fellows tune their rifles. Thinking if I got a tuning kit and kept original parts or at least have parts on hand.

Could I take a coil off the spring to drop the velocity ?. I know most are looking for MORE power and maybe I'll be ok . Id like the accuracy good enough so I can shoot at the neck knowing a hit will drop the bird and that a miss will not punch the roof.

Any one have experience with springs and "adjusting" them. Or can you order a lighter spring?

You certainly can remove a coil. However, before you do that, try shooting wadcutters at that range. At 10 meters they are Superbly accurate and dump energy on target that will drop small pests in their tracks. Another low cost option is the Beeman P17. I have one with a BSA red dot on it that works like a charm on sparrows, starlings and chipmunks. It's remarkable how accurate these. $30-ish pistols are!

bubblerboy64,

For over 30 years, the only airgun I had was a Beeman R7 (HW 30). I have LOTS of experience with that gun. My advice is to try it first without any modification. You'll have enough power at that range to kill pigeons without risk of putting holes in the metal roof. I got mine to shoot sparrows out of my aluminum Martin houses at ranges up to 25 yards. It worked brilliantly and I never punched a hole in any of my aluminum sheet metal houses.

One caution to you is that you'll be in jeopardy of ricochet if you hit that tin roof.

Also, at a mere ten yard range, you will benefit from a set of iron sights over a scope.

I'll certainly give it a try stock before any modifications. The gun ordered is a "special" from AOA with scope and moderator installed I plan to mount a flashlight / laser on the gun because of the low light in the barn.

My friend who owns the property has a gamo rifle and I'm sure hoping this HW is a better arrangement. The gamo hits hard but it has the worst trigger by a mlle that I've ever experienced. I can't shoot that rifle at all. I also don't like the recoil .

Your HW30 is going to make that Gamo's owner want to use his rifle for a boat paddle. Great Purchase on Your part!

Well I hope so. His wife always asks me what to buy him for Christmas. I'm going to tell her to get him another gamo so they have a matched set of paddles. 😄 Actually I think a HW 97 might be a good hint for him or the 30. He likes my PCP guns but he's not serious enough to get him into the PCP stuff. Plus I'd like to get my hands on the 97 ( with out spending MY money). You can see how devious I can be.

The 392 (after I worked trigger over) isn't half bad for the money. I just couldn't get much better then an inch shooting at 15 ft. I'd expect a one hole group at that distance. 😊 Biggest thing is pumping. Hunting no problem but target shooting that gets old. Out of the box the trigger is probably 12, lbs I got it down to 3 or so., Your grand daughter isn't going to be satisfied

I haven't tried a lot of different pellets. Thinking all of them should shoot good at the 15 to 20 ft i am shooting at. Now the gun will shoot 5 shots under an inch at 20 ft but I think it shoot thru the same hole at that distance

I may play with it a little more . I'll see how I like the HW 30.

i enjoy the quest . Something to do I'm sure most people would be satisfied with the 392

Ok. I shot some groups this morning and the best results came from the 25 extra heavy JSB pellets. The group shown is at 12 yards and it's typical of several groups shot with this pellet. Vertical stringing. I've shot several groups that look just like this one. I'm inclined to try sorting pellets to see if that helps. This group is not good at 12 yards but it's showing some potential.

Maybe I'm expecting too much

I also question if the scope being a scout scope advanced forward on the gun would in anyway affect the point of aim which certainly would affect the group size. Trying to eliminate as many variables as possible.

Any thoughts? The gun should knock down a pigeon but at 12 yards I'd expect the gun (and me) to reduce that group down to half of what I've accomplished to date

Hi, Bubblerboy-

As to the 392, I've read that there is often paint in the crown which needs to be removed with some type of solvent in order for the gun to be accurate-you might give that a try if you still have the 392, some guys use carburetor cleaner, just don't get any solvent on the seals or pump cup.
