Day two of the war with the chippies. A 1970s custom Sheridan

About 1/2 of the shots I’m getting Are very close. So today I carried an old Sheridan blue streak, converted to PCP, with an absolutely gorgeous custom stock. The entire rig can’t weigh more than 4 pounds.

I had two shots two kills.

The first one was maybe 12 yards, that 20 caliber pellet visibly knocked him backwards off the branch. No retrieval.

The second one was a good 30 yards. I put the post right on the junction of his neck and head. You can see the result.

This rifle is a dream. I’m sure someone spent well over $1000 to modify it along time ago. The work was top notch. The trigger is possibly the best of any Sheridan I’ve ever shot or touched.

This is absolutely the perfect stalking rifle.

I only fill it to 1200, because I’m afraid to go any higher. That gets me about 10 good shots. Crazy accurate with some old 20 caliber Crossman’s.

There is quite a bit of sport, in trying to get rid of these chipmunks.

I was certainly blessed from birth with excellent eyesight. It’s not as good as when I was young. However, if I remember to take the bifocals off, ha ha. I can still do pretty well.

I use something I call site picture. Everything within the peep, becomes part of the picture. And instead of trying to hold for instance the center of the crosshairs on the target, I try to center the target into the entire picture.

I also sometimes have to go back-and-forth between an area with a good light, and then back to the chipmunk. It’s not easy. Not like when I was a kid.

A guy named Harry from Oz taught me this 15 years ago. He claimed he could just shoot as well with a 12X as I could with a 30X. We kind of agreed to disagree, and both learned something from one another. Certainly Harry could use his 12X as good as anyone in the entire world with 50X. And he did it, by creating a consistent site picture. Then again, if you have 50X, you don’t need to worry about it. Certain targets lend them selves to this better than others. For instance a target that you can cut into fourths easily works well. A chipmunk in thick foliage not so much.

I’m pretty sure I could hit a pop can every time at 50 yards with this set up.

thanks all, I love this rifle.

Years ago I picked it up as part of an auction I won There were nine rifles in the auction, including a Sheridan A and Sheridan B. +2 other custom one-off Sheridans. This rifle in my mind, was kind of whatever, it came with the rest. I didn’t know it was a PCP, all I had was one picture.

It may well be my favorite of the entire bunch. After all, I carried the pump up version in the field for years. And that was after lusting for one, for at least 10 years.

Best air rifle I ever had was a peep sighted 5mm Blue Streak. Bought at the PX at Camp Lejeune, NC, in March of '77 - it burned in a shed fire in Feb of '99. At the time, while the internet was kind of a new fangled thing, I didn't know how to use it well enough to find another one. I settled for a Benji 392 instead. After the trigger FINALLY broke in ... it wasn't and hasn't been a bad substitute. Although a Sheridan w/ the original Sheridan 5mm 15.5 gr pellets has about 5-10 yards more effective range though and is easily a 50 yard airgun.

Thanks Mike! Learn something new every day and the site picture explanation is really really helpful! Phenomenal shooting skills and thanks for sharing some tidbits with us mere mortals. Eventually I’ll be 1/4 as good as you one of these days….well, will try anyways.
