Thomas Air Damaged skirts, does it really matter?

Even though they shot great just seeing them before hand would certainly make me not shoot them in a match just in case I had a weird flier, I'd have a reason to blame it on other than the wind or ME!
Fliers lose points .... If one can't be 100% confident in his equipment your not going to be able to concentrate on your shooting skill well as you would otherwise.

Interesting thing to note here is the very real placebo effect seen by competitive shooters in their preparation.

Personally, bive found better luck sorting barrels than I have found sorting pellets. And to a lesser extent, sorting by pellet lot has also been a worthwhile endeavor. Some tins of pellets are just crap. Nothing visually amiss, but they shoot poorer than "good" batches.
Most of us don't have the time or resources to sort barrels, but you are right in this regard, but sorting pellets is definitely a positive thing to do. When I shot 25M BR with my RAW TM1000, the most minute differences in all aspects of the equipment and my own psyche affected whether I won or lost a match, often by only 1 point. I've posted this picture before showing targets shot at 25M using sorted and unsorted pellets. You be the judge.

Bent skirts matter.... sometimes. I think the real questions are, how much, and to whom? If you are a competitive shooter, it's foolish to take a chance with them. If you are a casual shooter or plinker, one might think it foolish to take the time to repair them. I can shoot bottle caps at 25 yards all day with awful pellets. They would not all score 10, but an 8 or 9 gets the cap every time!

If you're sorting pellets, youve got plenty of time on your hands.

Barrels, like just about everything else in our universe, follow Gaussian distribution, or rather, bell curves. Most are decent, some are exceptional, and some are pure crap. One of my guns is on its 5th barrel. I won one of the 6? 2024 Extreme Field Target Grand Prixs last summer with that 5th barrel. With unsorted pellets, and the damned .22 Monster RDs at that.

(Ones ability to improve a barrel is also a factor, some can't be improved, regardless of experience and skill at doing so.)

Now that you have your barrel sorted out, you can sort your pellets and do better next time-tee hee.

Winners who shoot competitively typically are a tad neurotic & will pick up and turn over the smallest of stones looking for cumulative gathering of small nuggets.
By leaving it to dumb luck in having Zero Poa / Poi discrepancies due to the odd flyer is no different than not practicing before a match or in simpleton terms ... being unprepared for what lies ahead
Control and manage all you can will leave less to happen chance / poor luck.

I had made years ago a SKIRT straightening tool that was made to make skirts round again without making them flared out or larger in diameter.
By playing with a Lathes compound angle finding the matching angle of skirts I.D. made up a few of these tools for the different pellets being shot frequently.
Still use a few of them to this day and am sold on the premise it helps accuracy and saves otherwise damaged pellets in general.

Light pressure and a twist Back-N-Forth your done recreating a pellet accurate in skirt dimension as it was produced.

I think there would be a market for these.

I think there would be a market for these.
This share and conversation has happened many times over the years with many just Poo pooing the idea in general as non necessary. To others saying use a 1/4" Phono plug or Golf Tee etc ..
* What I've shared is a Precision Tool made for a specific pellet and not a universal fix all tool. In all thinking I made up 5 different ones in aluminum and marked them accordingly.
Made up a bunch more from acetal and gave them away to club members a few years ago.

Part of the beauty of owning guns with FX Original Smooth Twist barrels is pellets such as the ones pictured don't phase its accuracy at all (as far as hunting with them). Competition might be another matter. "Minute of Squirrel Head" is different from a sixteenth or thirty second of an inch making a difference between winning & losing.

That's pretty much what I'f found, short of being crushed the bend skirts work well, some have said that the air pressure pushes them out in the barrel. I'm tending to believe that.
Pellets are made made from pure lead and very soft. Most pellets have skirts larger than the head diameter. So when they enter the barrel, the skirts are swaged to the barrel sealing in the propellent HPA propelling them. If the pellet damage is relatively light, they will still fly straight. Severe damaged pellets will not.
