Cyclops Joe Rhea Explains Mil vs. MOA

I hope @JoeWayneRhea doesn’t mind me posting this link. I watched it earlier, found it helpful, and thought I’d share it. I did look at his recent posts and didn’t see this posted on AGN. Although I don’t understand it all, I feel that I have a better understanding after watching a few times. Maybe you will too if this holdover scope stuff is fairly new to you.

The video is approximately 6 minutes long. +1 Joe.

Good video by joe! The problem is that we actually need videos like that to explain how to use our scopes....why? Because of the ridiculous SAE invented by the imperial system to scam uneducated peasants that can’t do math. God forbid if the peasants learn the simple 10 based system and can do simple math, how would they cheat the common peasants out of everything? Even the formal colonial masters have adapted the metric system because the monarchy is no longer in power. Somehow this first world country still subject itself and its people to utter stupidity and a system made to dumb down the common people. Case and point, can anyone tell me off of top of their head how many feet and how many yards is in 3.78 miles??? How wide is 1 MOA at 1 mile? How about at 3.78 miles?

Let’s try that on the metric system: how many meters is in 3.78 KM? How about 3780 meters! Seems slightly easier if you ask me. In a Mil scope 1 Mil at 100 meter is 10 centimeter and ever 1/10 mil or 1 click is 1 centimeter and 1 meter is 10 mils. How about how wide is a Mil at 800 meters? 10*8=80CM or 1 meter at 1KM. how wide is 1 Mil hash at 3.78KM? Oh, how about 3.78 meters! Everything simply multiply or divide by 10, try that quick math with MOA.

America and its education system need to get out of the dark ages!

Agreed, though England has had a few Imperial holdovers as well. The US system is idiotic though.

Milliradians, (MRAD or Mil) and Minute of Angle, (MOA) Trivia

(Best with a 6 pack of BUD)

Formula for circumference of a circle = Diameter, (D) x Pi, (Pi = 3.14159.)

There are 7200” in (D) diameter of a 100 yard circle. (100 x 36” x 2 = 7200”)

Circumference of a circle at 100 yards = 22,619.448”, (7200” x 3.14159 Pi.)

MRAD and MOA is an angular, curved, measurement at a specific distance or range from the center of the circle.

6,283.185 Milliradians (MRAD) = 1 CIRCLE, (Pi 3.14159 x 2 x 1000 = 6,283.185 mathematical.)

6,400 Milliradians = 1 CIRCLE, (NATO rounded MRAD.)

21,600 Minutes = 1 CIRCLE, (360 degrees x 60 Minutes in 1 degree = 21,600 minutes)

1 MOA = 1.0471975” at 100 yards, 22,619.448”/21,600 Minutes, (1” rounded.)

1 MRAD = 3.6” at 100 yards, 22,619.448”/6283.185 MRAD, (mathematical.)

1 NATO MRAD = 3.534” at 100 yards, 22,619.448/6400 MRAD.

1 MRAD = 10 cm at 100 meters. (2 x PI x 1000 = 6283.185 MRADs in a circle). 100 meters = 10,000 cm x 2 = 20,000 cm in diameter of 100 meter circle. 20K x PI = 62,831.85/6,283.18 MRADs = 10 cm, for 1 MRAD at 100 meters = 10 centimeters.

1 MOA at 200 yards = 2”, at 400 yards = 4”, at 800 yards = 8”, etc.

1 MOA at 50 yards = ½”, 1 MOA at 25 yards = ¼”.

1 MOA at 1 mile = 18.43”

1 MOA on the Moon = 69.5 miles. (238,900 miles to the Moon)

Scope settings MOA or MRAD.

It also depends on what your scope's notion of 1 milliradian is, because the NATO milliradian differs from the mathematical definition of a milliradian.

A mathematically accurate radian is that part of a circle where 2 * PI radians is a full circle, and a milliradian, (MRAD), is 1/1000th of a radian, so a full circle is equal to approximately 6283.185 milliradians (2000 * PI).

But the NATO definition of a milliradian for use in ballistics is that a full circle is split into 6400 NATO milliradians.

Anyway, the difference is not very large, with mathematically accurate MRADs, 1 MRAD is 100 cm @ 1000 m, with 1 NATO MRAD, it is 98.2 cm @ 1000 m. For this reason, if your scope uses mathematically accurate MRADs, 1 MRAD is about 3.44 MOAs, but if it uses NATO MRADs, then 1 MRAD is 3.375 MOAs.

The distance of the reticle's movement per click is tan(angle) * distance, however, at longer distances this is not exactly equal to the change in point of impact, because of the difference between changes to the line of sight and changes in the bullet's trajectory.

degrees = MOAs / 60
MOAs = degrees * 60

degrees = MRADs / (PI * 1000) * 180
degrees = (MRADs / 6400) * 360 [with NATO MRADs]
MRADs = (degrees / 180) * PI * 1000
MRADs = (degrees / 360) * 6400 [with NATO MRADs]

MOAs = MRADs / (PI * 1000) * 10800
MOAs = (MRADs / 6400) * 21600 [with NATO MRADs]
MRADs = (MOAs / 10800) * PI * 1000
MRADs = (MOAs / 21600) * 6400 [with NATO MRADs]

An important thing to realize is that if you want to design mechanical things and do easier math, the Metric system works better. If you want to know how the natural world works, best to use the Imperial system, which is based on the old Egyptian system of measurement.

The Schumann Cavity Resonance of Planet Earth is 7.83 Hz, which digits add up to 18, which has a single digit value of 9.

The Classical Era composers tuned at 432 Hz for middle C. The digits add up to 9. It is a "natural" frequency in tune with Earth. When you go up an octave to to 864 Hz, which adds to 18, you get a single digit value of 9. When you go down an octave to 216 Hz, the single digit value is still 9, and it repeats endlessly up and down the musical scale. The modern tuning system of middle C equals 440Hz is dissonant. The single digit value is 8. 220 Hz has a single digit value of 4. 880 Hz has a single digit value of 7. Up and down the musical scale you never get back to the natural resonance of Earth and Nature. You can listen to recorded music that is tuned to 432 Hz and to 440 Hz and the 432 Hz version will sound more natural and relaxing.

Take a circle for instance, which is 360 degrees, which has a single digit value of 9. Divide the circle and it is 180 degrees, single digit value of 9. Divide again and you get 90, single digit value of 9. Half of that is 45 degrees, single digit value of 9. Half of that is 22.5 degrees, single digit value of 9. A square, or any other geometric straight sided figure, when all inside angles are measured, will add up to a single digit value of 9. 90x4=360 degrees, which has a single digit value of 9. Take an equilateral triangle which has internal angles of 60x3=180 degrees, which has a single digit value of 9. All exterior angles of geometric figures will also have a single digit value of 9 when added together.

You can look up a video on the internet where it explains the magic of the number 9. The ancients knew something when they invented systems based on the number 9. Maybe scopes should have a system based on the number 9, just like geometry and music? Just a thought.

In the Beatles White Album, there is a song where John Lennon repeats over and over, "number 9, number 9, number 9". All I can say is "hint, hint, hint". The prime integer of 9 is 3. 3x3 = 9. 3x9 =27. 3x27 = 81. 3x81 = 243. All have single digit values of 9. Nicola Tesla was no dummy when he decided on a 3-Phase electrical power grid, and not a 4, 5 or 7-Phase system. More modern day designers and engineers should be aware that "getting in tune" is a good way to design a system that lasts and is in resonance and not dissonant with the natural world.
