Customer Reviews on Air Guns

I agree with so much of what has been said. As for giving a middle quality gun 5 stars, I can see how that would happen. Something you said Geezer is where I think it falls. People making the reviews are giving praise to a gun they just got, but also have nothing to compare it to.
When I got my Gamo break barrel, I thought it was a pretty good gun. But I couldn't make it group at all. I sent it back to Gamo for repair. They sent it back saying it was fine. They sent me a target with a 2" group......... at 10 feet!!! they thought that was acceptable. sheesh.
So then I bought my first PCP. A Marauder .25 cal Gen 1. I have to say this is a really good first PCP. I purchased it after reading tons of "wow this is the greatest gun ever made" crap. With claims of accuracy that not even the best guns can match. However, I was not disappointed with the reviews because I took them for what they were. Someone excited about a new gun or someone who has nothing to compare it to.
Compared to my FX Crown, the Marauder doesn't even deserve to sit in its shadow. And I say that meaning that the Marauder STOCK configuration needs improvement. It can be made into a really great gun. But the Marauder is still a great gun for the money and I have fun getting it out and shooting it. It brings back really great memories of learning to tune a gun and learning the inner workings of a PCP airgun. Also the first airgun good enough to hit the bulls eye at 50 yards.

The price we pay to have a accurate gun is crazy !! Any PB guy would wrap most of thes "great air rifles" around a tree ... If more than $500 it should put 5 shots in a inch at a hundred... Without spending another 500 to get it anywhere that !! Love these types "This is a great gun but I changed everything on it to get it accurate !!! " You know what they say about opinions...

Before I bought my first air rifle earlier this year I did tons of reading. I searched forums looking for rifles that fit what I was looking for, then I searched for more in depth info on the particular models I was looking at. Then I started reading reviews and narrowed my choices even more. I too like some others have posted for the most part threw out the high and low reviews. Like the guy who gave his rifle five stars although he just got it unpacked and hadn't shot it yet. Or the guy who gave it one star because he didn't like the color of the wood in the stock. now the guy who gave his rifle four stars or one star and lists the reasons for the rating after a year of use I paid attention to.

Also me being new to the sport may have a different view on what is a good five star rifle than a guy who has been at it for decades. It's all subjective and take the reviews with a pound of salt.

I like Youtube videos, Facebook group replies, and these forums for a more, shall we say, " real world" review. I try to be objective when I review rifles I've purchased, the scopes they come with, or those said to be good. The various pellets that seem popular, versus penetration and condition they wind up in penetrating various things. Amount of recoil was secondary...but I'm seeing more recoil is bad for scope mounts moreso that a proper air gun scope. So no matter how you slice it, research is most assuredly needed.

For reviews....have you ever seen one of the "big reviewers" give a bad review.....

What I do is search the forums and see what the real people say....find reviews on youtube that do not look professional.....this is a regular Joe telling what he things about the gun.

All of the "professional" reviews get paid for their reviews.....they have a bias. They all fall into the same trap.

I've read more than a few of the Tom Gaylord Blog entries for Pyramyd Air. Sometimes I think he wants so badly to say "The gun shot like crap". You come back the next part and he has done something to it then gives it praise. I'm sorry but that doesn't WORK in the real world. Nobody should put down good money then have to put down MORE to have the air rifle shoot to a reasonable level. In Tom's articles I've seen many times where it looked like he wants to say the truth but then patches it up in the next installment saying how great it is. That is BS.
