Custom Texan Stock Build - My Latest Project

Walnut and Iron is always my favorite in for a gun.

I have been wanting to build another Texan stock, so here is my latest build. It is coming along nicely. It is sharing some of the same lines as my last stock but making a few changes to reduce the weight, and add some classic rifle looks to the Texan.



Here is my layout to start from.



One great big CHUNK of walnut.



Some rough layout on the blanks. Looking to avoid some checking and knots the best I can.



Some ebony being prepped for forearm and grip caps. This stuff is Black Gold!!



Forearm Cap with a tenon fitted.



Dry fitting the cap before gluing.



Glued and clamped....sure hope it turns out as good as the dry fitting.



Next day after taking the clamps off....looks promising



Sanding down one side....I am tickled with the results

After getting the inletting done on the top side, I came back to the trigger area and cut it thickness for fitting to the action.

That is allot of werq and a beautiful job you have done thus far! I nearly flunked woodshop back in high school think it was cuz I ran my thumb into the band saw blade. But I did have some troubles with making pieces of wood square as well. 

Can't wait to see it when you are done with it.

I don't know. It keeps getting lighter as I work on it, and most of the weight is still there in the butt, which will get reduced a lot with shaping it.

...., Lots more tools than I have to,,, ....

Heck, I just grabbed the sharpest butter knife out of the kitchen draw and started carving.....lol The Edward Scissor hands of wood carving....lol

I had a little time this afternoon to get back to the stock. Time to start the butt stock and grip.

I bored a starting hole for the thumbhole, and took a measured amount of the grip on both sides. That kind of creates a couple of reference surfaces for shaping the grip. Then started shaping the butt with a big SaburrTooth burr on a right angle grinder. It removes material SCARY fast.


A little more cut off.



Still not depth enough so cut some more off. Getting there. Next will be starting to opening up the thumbhole and the left side of the butt.




The hard part here for me is going far enough but not to far.

I inlet for the tank bracket and made a strap to secure it under the butt pad and fitted the but pad.

Thanks!! I'm real happy with how it is turning out. 

Stock is weighing in at 3.5 lbs

Started with the first coat of oil today. Many more to go!

The oil finish is coming along If my count is right this is at 7 coats of oil. I think I will keep going until the end of the week which should put it at 13 coats with getting in two per day.
