Tuning Current Restoration Project - Santa Rosa Beeman R7

Picked this abused and neglected Santa Rosa Beeman R7 (Weihrauch HW30) in .177 caliber a couple of weeks ago, with the intent to revive it. First test it received was to fire a pellet to see if the trigger, safety and internals worked, it fired pellet and safety worked.

It came missing the rear stock screw, rear trigger guard screw and trigger guard. I was lucky enough to find all three of these items and when assembled it will be complete with the exception of the front barrel sight, I am still looking for that part.

So far I have redone the stock, finished in Tru-oil ( 5 coats) but not rubbed out yet as it has a few more days to cure. Even though the wood is not perfect, I like the character it gives and looks of it in person.

To further the restoration I have purchased the new Vortek PG3 SHO steel guide tune kit, breach seal and new piston seal.

My next decision point before installing the new tune kit is to decide between performing a cold blue, attempt a DIY home hot blue or trying out a bluing product from Duracoat called Dura Blue.

Just a thought, you might want to brown the barrel and action. It would continue to look vintage and still protect the metal. I have built several muzzleloaders and used Laurel Mountain's Browning solution. You can find a bunch of info about using it and see examples of the result online. It is a cold process, does not require any special equipment except for maybe a humid place to hang the parts, and I have had great results. Usually 5-7 coats with carding (gently removing) the oxidation between iterations gives a deep plum/chocolate color that is incredibly durable. Usually you only have to polish the metal up to about 320 grit.

Well my 15 year old son decided this weekend he wanted the Beeman R7 as a daily shooter. He asked if I could just cold blue it for now and put the tune kit in so he could shoot it yesterday and today. He has it sighted in and is getting 1/2 inch groups at 25 yards. He says there is no recoil, very quiet when cocking and shooting.

He also said he likes the trigger after I adjusted it for him, it has a nice 1st stage and a very predictable 2nd stage. I only adjusted the trigger after noticing on the first three or 4 shots he would barely touch the blade and it would fire with the slightest of touch.

My son told me I should find another one for his older brother and myself. I told him have fun with this one, and I will start looking for another project. The pictures show before and after condition.
