Woke up this morning and saw this headline on NBC's Today show.. "Crows" invade Walmart parking lot in Texas.. The images NBC showed on their preview was some "long tail- feathers" black bird that looks like a grackle.. What are these birds? 'cuase they ain't common crows we hunt in the SE USA..

Those are NOT crows. The author needs to do more research before writing. The pictures are a little blurry but they look like either grackles or starlings.

That's what I thought. Sorry for posting this in the hunting section, but I figured hunters would know what they were..

Grackles,probably on migration and just set down for a rest stop.

Where I grew up in Central NY, we would see wayyy more birds than that.. 
To this day, my aunt has some sort of insane phobia of them - after watching "The Birds" as a kid.. 
Our city would have to use something like fire crackers to try to 'scare' them off, but, I doubt it worked.. 
They usually just scatter for a bit, and return a bit more spread out..

I invested in a bunch of bottle-rockets years back..
When birds get too populated too close to where I live [and start to drive me nuts]
I'd have fun launching fireworks at em'. haha [Alternative to shooting them / living in the city]

These are grackles and very common in Texas. Google "heb grackle" and you'll find tons of pictures and videos of thousands of grackles in similar scenes. You'll also find the coveted HEB grackle t-shirt that the creator was served a cease and desist for..

I recorded the NBC's Today Show this morning. I'll watch it when I get home tonight and see if they ran that story and said they were crows.. My guess is they don't care and don't know the difference.. "Crows" will "headline" better than grackels.. 

In my view they would look pretty stupid retracting / correcting their mistake.. Maybe they will have to....

You are correct.. Google rules us. ( well some of us) so many times these "millenails" use words that mean something else from what I was taught in school. BUT, if one "Googles" it, sure enough about 6 lines down its now accepted as correct " American" or better yet "Google."

They are definitely Grackles (greater grackle). They congregate in town at night and for some reason like our Walmart too and a few other hot spots. The trees surrounding the parking lot are absolutely packed in the evenings and night. The ground underneath the trees is covered in crap, jut like it had been white washed. During the day they head back out to the country, especially to the dairies and then again in the evenings head back by the 10's of thousands without exaggerating any. Very noisy as well in that large of flocks. Here's the kicker.... they are protected by the state of NM. I think they should be classified just as the Collared Eurasians. The grackles are also bad about nest robbing and eating the young of other species.

Send them over here Jimmy. No protection here at all. They used to come to my ranch but I must have killed all who knew the way here because I don't see them any more!

I think if they are detrimental to crops and such you can shoot them. There not very smart though. I've had a couple fly right into my sight picture at a very wrong time, purely accidental though.

Grackles are pretty smart. Here in Okla. if you pull in any fast-food joint and eat in your car these things will show up looking for handouts. They'll almost fight to the death over a frenchfry.
