Crown second thoughts

I have owned and shot many Air Rifles in my time...

My Crown is the most versatile Air Rifle with supreme constant accuracy..

Have anyone of you Crown Owners done the simple Mods now available???

Mine pushes those MK2 34gr. Pellets at the muzzle 950fps.. Dime size groups all Day at 95 yards here with no flyers

It has the Regulator beefed up and a new Hammer Mod ver. #3 from Earnest at FX U.S.A.

Do them and come back here and post your results and preferences.. Then compare...

My Crown is only 2 months old and is fast becoming my favorite. It’s very easy to tune and when done properly is beautifully consistent and accurate. I bought mine new in South Africa for exactly half what I would have to pay for a Redwolf. I’m sure the Redwolf must be the pinnacle but I’m stunned at the performance of the Crown at its price point.

And I like light air rifles. My pest control activities often last up to 6 hours. I started appreciating a light air rifle when I started taking my Steyr LG110 Hunting into the field. Sold all my other air rifles after that as they were just too heavy for the application. The Crown is equal to the Steyr in the accuracy department.

After reading what the op wanted to do with his rifle, go up the creek and do some hunting, I might have to agree with his concern. After reading the thanksgiving day squirrel hunting thread and what happened to him and his rifle the concern becomes real. Just picture yourself busting your ass and either pile driving your rifle into the ice or it goes flying hopelessly bouncing on the ice. Some rifles will take it, a lot won’t. Some guys call hunting, shooting squirrels off their back deck, while others go out into the woods. I don’t think the op was questioning accuracy but was questioning the toughness if a mishap should occur while up the creek. I for one would get the veteran long because I don’t want to be up shi$ creek after a fall.

Exactly. Thanks for noticing this and suggesting the Taipan. I’m still up in the air at this point, but I might list the Crown FS/FT after the first of the year unless something changes.

I’ve owned both guns you ask about. Both really nice but I sold the Tiapan because I liked the ergonomics of the Vulcan so much more than the Tiapan. I have the synthetic stock.

I shoot JSB 18.13 gr. at 870fps and I can get 70-75 shots filling to 225 bar. Quarter sized 10 shot groups at 75 yards. I’ve shot dime sized 5 shot groups at 75 yards-see my avatar. I’ve had the gun 5-6 months and it’s been reliable.

I did add a DonnyFL Tatsu to make it quieter.

Rich,

I've had my .22 Crown a couple of months, and I appreciate your observations. There are several things that leave me a little cool on it. The trigger is, IMO, a bit of a mess. The release quality is good, but it's definitely a field trigger, and if you try to get it below about 13 ounces, things get tricky. That said, it wasn't designed as a match rifle, so I realize my criticism is a little unfair. I've never trusted the barrel/sleeve/liner/shroud system, too many parts. But again, I guess I'm judging it from a match rifle perspective. In the face of my less-than-supportive comments, I must add, it shoots great. It tends to foul quickly, but with a clean barrel, it shoots very, very good. Would I trust it to bang around through the woods, probably not, but I put a lot of air rifles in that category. I have two robust air rifles with which I would be comfortable dragging through the woods, a RAW and a Steyr, both heavy, and not ergonomically suited to field use. At this point, I'm keeping the Crown, at least for a while. I just bought a Daystate Red Wolf in .22, and it has its interesting issues as well. I think a little buyer's remorse is common in most things, including precision air rifles. None are perfect, but most are interesting. And, as Warren Page said, "only accurate rifles are interesting".

Having been around a bunch of FX rifles and recently purchasing a Taipan Veteran - you get a lot more for your money with the Taipan. Better trigger, really good out of the box accuracy/precision (for an airgun), easy to adjust velocity, good power at ~40 for (.22), 20 MOA picatinny rail, and arguably better build quality.

No experience with Vulcan. But the Taipan punches above it's weight, and I'd take it over an FX anytime.
