Has anyone else tried to use the standard Crown, Wildcat, Maverick magazines in their DRS?
I own two Crowns and have also owned several other FX rifles which all used the same magazine. That made life simple and a bit less expensive. I have also uses Stud Loader, CARM and Orion magazines. The variety allowed me to get what I was specifically after.
When I bought the DRS I assumed that the Crown magazines would work because I saw a video by Sub12 Airgunners where he showed how to modify the larger mags to reduce the spring tension. Little did I realize that he was using the latest version of the larger mags (the one with two screws on the back and two o-rings on the front. But I wanted to be able to use all of my old magazines!
The old ones just tend to fall out of the breach - the culprit is that the location of the o-ring on the older mags is in a position where it never engages with the DRS block (see picture below. The magazine is fully inserted in the picture and the action will cycle. It is just too loose and wants to slide out.
My solution was to 3D print some new magazine covers with two o-rings in different locations. Below is a picture of the old mag cover, the Mini mag (which comes with the DRS) cover, and my 3D printed cover. Note the position of the o-rings.
These positions allow the orings to engage the block and hold the magazine securly in place. I also modified the underside as I don't need the added depth for long pellets that the circular grooze in the old mag cover provides. However, I did need to put in a small groove as there is a small pin on the rotating piece in the mag that sticks up and makes contact with the cover if there is not a groove. See my last pic.
I did the drawing in Sketchup Pro, coverted to an STL file then printed on my Bambu P1S. If anyone wants the files I will be happy to share them. Just reply to this posting and let me know what file type you want.
Cheers,
Greg
