Cross eye dominant AND progressive lens shooting

Just getting into air guns and got a FX Wildcat Mk3. I'm right handed and left eye dominant, and wear progressive lens glasses. This is probably the worst combination to have when shooting. No problems shooting a firearm pistol right handed, as I just hold it in line with my left eye and keep both eyes open.

I've looked at a bunch of threads here and a lot are regarding wearing glasses, and a lot with cross eye dominant, but I didn't see much at all dealing with both.

I've got my target at 30 yards in my backyard and using a Hawke 4x16-44 scope and shooting right handed which is definately more comfortable to me.

First I tried closing my left eye with glasses on. I couldn't get a very clear image through the scope. Same thing with both eyes open.

Taking my glasses off gave me a good clear image, so then tried closing my left eye but it feels odd trying to keep pressure to keep the left eye closed and trying to focus on the target with the weaker right eye. This seems to be the best scenario so far, but wondering what others with the same situation do. I've seen the patch/block on the left eye lens of the glasses, but I think the progressive lenses are screwing up that method.

What's your best solution for those with the same issue?

I am right handed, left eye dominant and wear progressive lens glasses. One of my uncles figured out I was left eye dominant about 50 years ago when we were quail hunting. So I've pretty much always shot from my left shoulder. That is evidently a new thing for you - so it feels weird - but may be your best alternative if you can get used to it. BUT it may mean you have the wrong gun. FX loves super big magazines sticking right into the face of those of us who shoot from our left shoulder. There is probably a solution to that (like a smaller magazine or altered head position) but a gun that is actually made to be shot from the left shoulder works very nicely (like my P35s).

I don't think progressive lenses are an issue at all but it does affect my head position, I'm sure. You just have to have your head tilted right to look through the right part of your glasses. Feels entirely natural to me (like shooting from my left shoulder) but that is after I've done it a long time.

If you will only bench rest shoot then a patch over your left eye may work but I wouldn't want to hunt that way or even plink that way.

I have the same problem, cross eye, dominant, stepped glasses lenses, AND...an astigmatism to boot. I remember up to about my late-30's when I didn't need the damned glasses...that's long gone !
But I've learned to shoot both eyes open, even scoped. I went from red/green dot sights, then tried holographic sights, then tried prism sights, then scopes.

I'm at the point that I like prism sights the best, but also have no problem with dot or holographic sights. But I'm still not overly comfortable with an actual scope. The low power (1 to 6 or 8 power) work...ok, but I don't buy unless they have an adjustable side wheel for adjusting the "parallax".
As of now, I have three scopes, but only "one" (1x6)...on one of my Daystate Pulsars ! The other two are sitting in my safe...resting !

I am not cross eye dominant but I do use progressive lenses. When shooting I could never get my vision through the right spot in my lenses. I also have astigmatism. So I use a cheap single vision pair that I use for eye protection/hazardous work. They work great for all my shooting needs. This way I prevent damaging my more expensive progressive glasses.

Thanks,

If you searched the threads you probably saw that I ended up with Decot Hy-Wyd shooting glasses. Got my progressives in the right place so I could shoot comfortably. Don’t know about the cross eyed dominant, seems like you might have to try lefty as suggested above. Red dots and similar are great at shorter distances. Small targets outside 20 yards or so can be hard without magnification though. Good luck.

I’m right handed, left eye dominant. I can shoot with the right eye looking through scope and left eye open but with a lot of concentration required, almost to a point that I’m distracted from looking at target. So I mostly just close left eye. I’ve tried the blocker on the eye glass, it works but when I have the spotting scope on the left side on a stand I have to raise my glasses. They make a clip on blocker that’s hinged but never got one. I also where progressive lenses and they do not present any issue, other than I need to make sure they stay at the top of my nose bridge like they’re supposed to. In summer heat they have a tendency to want to slide down so I make sure the stay up. An elastic eye glass strap would be helpful.
So typically I just close the left eye. Ain’t no way I’ll shoot left handed. Strangely, from the first time I ever picked up a bow, I shoot lefty, and that works great, just like when shooting pistol. Keep pluggin’ at it.

I would think that if you shoot right hand and are left eye dominant it would be more comfortable to shoot with your right eye than crane your neck over to sight with your left eye.

My issue is my vision is slowly changing with age. Far sight still better than 20/20 with glasses but my near focus distance is getting too long to use a notch rear sight, with a peep I'm fine. Need new progressives.

Right handed and left-eye dominant here. No glasses (yet......) but I can tell I'll be there for up close in a few years. I naturally started shooting rifles left handed when I was younger because I actually could only wink by closing my right eye. I had to train myself to be able to close just my left eye. I was young - around 11-12 at the time at sleep away camp. It never really felt awkward from the beginning but now I can't even hold a rifle and shoot right handed - it feels completely awkward to me.

I'd give shooting only lefty a try for a while. Maybe the muscle memory will sink in and it will start to feel natural.

Right hand-left eye dominant. Figured that out when I was very very young. I been wearing glasses for a long while now, just for distance like when I'm driving. Never heard of progressive lenses, I use to wear Bi-Focals. Couldn't stand them. I don't wear my glasses when I shoot. (scopes only) I close my left eye. Never had an issue.

These guys make some really nice glasses. I use them for trap. My score and accuracy increased. They might have some insight into your eye condition and could offer some advice.

Thanks for all the responses. I know I'm not going to shoot lefty, that just feels awkward plus the magazine would be in my face with the gun I have.
I'll try a piece of tape over the left lens, and try to find the best area of the right progressive lens that gives the best image.

If that doesn't work out, then no glasses and keep left eye closed, or try to train the right eye to be dominant. I've been printing and using the 30 yard target scoring thing that someone posted. Can compare scores and see what's working best.
