Crosman Model 140 2nd Variant Refreshed and Shooting Once Again

About a month ago I resealed a Crosman 140 4th variant I became fascinated with the design and construction of the 140. Yes the 4th variant is nice with the trigger pack design but that is not me, I wanted an early example of the 140. As luck would have it I found this cheap beat up, rusting, not capable of holding air, loose barrel Crosman 140 2nd variant on the bay site and decided why not get it and see what I could do. 3 and a half weeks later the end result is a rifle I am very pleased with, shoots now, holds air for days and after cleaning it up I find it to be a very beautiful rifle in the crazy grained Elm stock.

Some say the trigger on this variant is disappointing. Strange thing is I like it and as long as you stay to 10 pumps or under it functions just fine. I will be taking it out to shoot it for velocity and accuracy once we get back above zero. Testing it in my shop it sounded like a 22lr so I know it will pack a punch a even 6 pumps. Here are pictures of before and after reseal and refresh:

Scottblair,

Nice rifle there as well, i have been thinking about getting a 1400 now but finding one in the right price range is near impossible at the moment.

The next "Lost Cause" project to keep me busy is basically a trash can find Crosman 120 found it on the bay site a couple of weeks ago with a BIN price or make offer, it took about 3 weeks of additional waiting after my initial offer of the former owner not selling it or getting any offers to accept my final offer which was even well below my initial from 3 weeks prior.

The 120 is tore down now and in process of cleanup, paint prep and stock refinish and reseal. I also have a seal kit but it has one seal that is too small (this one has two large black seals) so I am working on finding material to make my own seal for it, it will need a rear sight at some point but I may just use a Mac1 Crosman scope mount I have for a little while. Well atleast that is the plan for the 120 if all goes well, if not it will become parts for future projects.

Fantastic work Elroy! I also found the "dump valve" very interesting. And the auto cocking is pretty cool.

Scott, I remember seeing your 1400 a while back. It motivated me to fit a butt pad to a basket case one I had. The stock was in such rough shape, so I figured there was nothing to lose if I botched it. It turned out "ok" and was a good learning experience. And it shoulders so much nicer.

Its a Sears branded unit with grooves to fit a scope. 6 pumps pushes Crosman 14.3s at 600 fps(12fpe). Very accurate as it will group single ragged hole at 25yds(1/4-3/8"). Love the carbine length and light weight. Groovy wood grain. It is a bit loud for the backyard.

Very nice job Jason. Yours came out great. The recoil pads really do make a rifle look more elegant, and so much more functional, including when you want to stand it in a corner on a hard wood floor. 😉
