Crosman 760 Pumpmaster Model 760X -- Review

I know what you might be thinking..."This clown is going backwards!" Lol I picked up the Daisy Lever Action Carbine in pink for my wife's 9 year old daughter for Christmas. I decided to write down every air rifle they had on the shelf at Wal-Mart and Murdoch's to do a comparison. That's when I noticed the Benjamin Trail Stealth in .22 which will likely be my next air rifle. Crosman addressed a couple issues, the trigger and sound suppressing with that rifle and I'm interested.

Since I'm on a fixed income, that likely will not happen until after the new year. Then I saw the Pumpmaster 760. It was actually a few bucks cheaper at Murdoch's, but no 4x15 scope. Since it was only a few bucks more, I decided to stick with Wal-Mart and check out the cheesy scope. Got it home, no scope in the box, have to take it back. Next day, I take my boxed rifle to the sporting department where I had seen 2 or 3 boxes like mine that advertise a scope. I put the box down on the counter by the register and go to the shelf where I had seen those boxes just the night before. As I'm standing there with my wife's daughter, the Wal-Mart employee walks up and stands next to me, but says nothing. So I just start explaining what's going on and that it looks like the boxes I saw the night before have been pulled from the shelf.

We walk over to the counter where I set my box down and he goes behind the counter, bends down and picks the top box off a stack of three that are set on the ground, out of sight, behind the counter. Instantly I knew something sketchy was going on. I told him I just want to exchange mine for one that has the scope, as advertised. He opens all three boxes, no scope. So I say whats up? False advertising? Somebody open up boxes and steal a bunch of 4x15 scopes? He says maybe it's just showing that it's possible to mount a scope. Now, if I didn't have my wife's daughter with me, I would've went to battle and walked out with a 4x15 Tasco scope for free for that silly comment. But those things take time and 9 year olds just don't have any patience. I went ahead and bought that $8 Tasco scope, which I will be returning today. Why produce something that is next to useless? I didn't know if my 4x32 Centerpoint that came with the F4 would fit. Well, it does and THIS should be the included scope.

Here's some shots and attempted zeroing of the Tasco:

The adjustment turrets do not click. They keep telling us these things are not toys but that scope is the most toy-like thing I have seen, yet. It HAD to go. I would prefer using the open sights to this useless thing...would definitely be able to see the target better.

I'm only shooting pellets through this thing, no BB's, ever. Crosman Copper Magnum 10.6 grain. Here's some shots after changing out the scope:

This little rifle takes me back. Loading BB' s in the pellet port and then wondering why they roll down the barrel when I aim downward.

I haven't even broken it in, yet and the groups are tightening up. Can't go wrong for less than $30!!!

I bought this exact rifle over Thanksgiving to begin teaching my grandchildren to shoot (5, 6, 6, & 8 years old). The 8 year old killed a big ole fox squirrel on our 2nd hunt, it was his first ever on his first hunt. He is hooked! He didn't kill it with this pellet rifle he used a single shot .410 but I'm teaching him to shoot with it.

That is awesome! I figure if they're strong enough to pump it/cock it, they're old enough to shoot it. After the 9 year old graduates from the Daisy, she has this, then the F4 to look forward to. I told her about Olympic shooting and had her interest piqued. She's thinking gymnastics...which is ok. I'm thinking targets!!

I think it would be beneficial to get a variable such as a 3-9x rather than a fixed 4x IMHO...

Something with an adjustable object or side focus parallax with at least 10 yard minimum focus distance.

CA

That's a bit excessive for this little rifle. I should put a $50 scope on a $25 rifle? Pass.

Since it was supposed to come with a 4x15, a 4x32 is an obvious upgrade that didn't cost me anything since it was lying around after being replaced by an upgrade.

I like the Winchester 4x32AO scope. I also like the Centerpoint 3-9x32 mildot scope that came with the GuideHawk NP, that went to the model 70 before landing on the 760-D Pumpmaster, variant 8. The Winchester 4x32AO adjusts down to 15ft & 30ft markings (5 & 10 yards, respectively) before going to yard markings. Clear and accurate so far. And the Centerpoint 3-9x32 is their German-style mildot I happened to like.

I'd like to get a few more of the Winchester 4x32AO's for the other 760's in my collection. Good scope for their limited range.

Here's the model#70 Pellgun with the Winchester 4x32AO on Hawke mid-rise mounts;

. ... i once heard that crosman could downsize to only produce the 760 rifles (and all of their variants, i suppose) - and still survive as a company.....and that crosman mostly does the rest to accomodate for american airgunning.... i think they were a 60 million dollar / yr company (corporation) when i heard that back in 2010.....i sat down at thanxgiving dinner with my cousin's friends and neighbors - and a fella across from me explains that he worked for crosman during the summers while he was not in college (1970's). they had some type of training equipment that train cops to shoot only the bad guys , using those model 38 pistols - and he helped develop that system......these model 760 shooting kits were on sale around here for $20 , and even the pink ones looked so cool that i got one for my mom's birthday - because my dad has the chrome 760 by their back door (they have a ranchette).....looking back on that , it was just my airgun addiction hiding behind an excuse to buy one...not everyone loves pellet guns like we do , which i cannot understand. you know how moms can give you that funny look ? when i got that , i explained that since they have two remote controls going to the same tv - that they may as well have two pellet guns (his and hers) by the back door......and when that didnt fly , i said , " but mom , they'll be collectable one day. just keep in the box , unopened and store it up in the attic and give to one of your granddaughters in a few years." " that was the last one on the shelf and they dont make them anymore." .....about three days later , she thanked me for the pellet gun.........(she once had an antique sales space).......i was beginning to wonder , tho..... i am currently rebuilding the first run production of this 760 rifle. it shoots only bb's , has a flat top piston , a dump valve (like the japanese sharp pumpers and their indonesian clones, webley rebel) , and wood stock and metal sides...i had to acquire another one from a trash pile to finish this one.... all that being said , even with all of the cybernetic uber-powerful precision airguns that cost as much as used car we have today , perhaps we should should cherish the spaces crosman model 760's have in our hearts. my favorite was the model 760/20 with the hooded front sight. - rane on. - ps: i just emailed my mom that she is getting a super cool pellet gun for chistmas. 😄 ..

Model 760/20 (Model 760 20th Year Commemorative)

- BB/.175 cal. repeater or .177 cal. pellet single-shot pneumatic, similar to Model 760. Mfg. 1985.

... i just started signing my balls - like babe ruth or ted williams ..... and yeah....this one has become like the lesser forum. steve in ct of the big forum would never have all of this negativity .... i decided just have fun with it , dan0 .... you should read my profile... i'm considering changing my id to " red-baller , shot caller " ( .....20" blades ...getting laid tonight...searchin for a better way , better way , better way... wanna be a baller , shot caller...) i deserve some of it , tho - honestly.

I also have a 760 Powermaster variant one with wood stocks. Built 6/70. Only the plastic ones were called Pumpmaster. And only the variant one through variant four that I also have are metal receivers. It also shoots BB's and pellets, but it only sees pellets from here on. The 760 variant 1 looks to have been originally given a low-grade flame maple set of stocks. But the brittle, murky spray stains factories used in those days mostly hid it. You can see them faintly in this pic.

And after being restomodded with a NOS 761XL barrel, mac 1 seal/piston upgrade kit, and MOE 2.5" picatinny rails for the scope. The Minwax #224 special walnut nailed the original stain color. Polished & reblued all steel parts, even the screws.

And here's a shot of the 760 Powermaster variant 4. Built 1/77, it's among the last to get metal receiver halves. Seen here with period-correct Weaver V22-A Dual X 3-6x18 scope.
