Making noise worked great for me. They tune in and stay still for a long time. Besides, I am so close, it is hard not to be heard. As I move in my camping chair, click the IR torch on, etc... I always making a little bit. I am also close to them. 15-20 yards is typical for me. But I see what you are saying. A very few do leave immediately if they hear anything. But most stay. These are "suburbian" raccoons. Very used to humans being near.I leave plenty of bait so they stick around for a long time. Stay completely silent and wait for the proper head orientation for a good shot. Works almost every time no use scaring them off trying to get them to look the right way. Making noise forces you to take the shot within a second or two before they take off.
