I leave plenty of bait so they stick around for a long time. Stay completely silent and wait for the proper head orientation for a good shot. Works almost every time no use scaring them off trying to get them to look the right way. Making noise forces you to take the shot within a second or two before they take off.
Making noise worked great for me. They tune in and stay still for a long time. Besides, I am so close, it is hard not to be heard. As I move in my camping chair, click the IR torch on, etc... I always making a little bit. I am also close to them. 15-20 yards is typical for me. But I see what you are saying. A very few do leave immediately if they hear anything. But most stay. These are "suburbian" raccoons. Very used to humans being near.

I know what you mean I used to live at city where the homes were close together. Once I saw 4 raccoons walking on my backyard fence. I open the sliding glass door and made some noise to scare them off. I was less than 25' away. They just looked at me while keeping their causal walk across the fence. Now I live where the house are more than 100' apart the raccoons are spooked more easily.

These urban raccoon are fearless of humans! If legal you could pick them off with a muzzle to the head.

Coyotes also fearless. Max would have an easy time racking up the head count.
Ugh... For 20+ years I had nothing against them until one walked into my garage, 3 feet away from me, while I was sipping beer with my back at my car. It came back twice within a minute. I had to chase it. Then later my wife saw it eating flowers maybe 5 feet from my 4 years old. That was a big coon. All that made me YouTube a bit, and ended up somehow on EdGun's channel. That channel sold me on a L2. Which got me here and into PCP. Don't have the L2 anymore. But I am backyard hunting once or twice a week. The brave ones are gone. I did see quite a few with rabies limping around. It is just a matter of time before one will tear into someone in Safran in that park.

Don't worry, the bums will be fine... the coons might catch something though!

Just spotted one sleeping in my neighbor's tree out back. Put out a fresh can of tuna, let's hope he goes for it.

I'd take him now, but its dark and I'm not climbing around in the brush/easement area right now. If I do, he's going to make one hell of a ruckus when he lands and does the dance.

Edit: we watched each other til about 1130pm and he came down slowly from the tree and disappeared. I stayed up hoping he'd pop up over my fence for the bait but he definitely knew what was up. At least I know where he hangs out and what time he wakes up. I'll get him.

Be glad all you’re dealing with is a raccoon at your feeder. These guys not only eat all the seed, they smash the feeder. Sometimes it’s just easier to bring the feeder in at night. No bait, no problems.
