Contemplating Adding a .22 PCP to the Stable

This has been on my mind for a while. After reading plenty of posts on about advantages and disadvantages of .22 caliber air rifles I’m considering making a move into that arena in the near future. I definitely want something that can shoot as well, preferably without having to swap barrels when I want to shoot them. I’d like something that’s comfortable and robust enough to hunt with and fun to use for plinking and punching paper targets, but not too heavy. Side lever actions are desirable with a decent shot count (at least 25 shots per fill). I’d like something I don’t have to constantly tune and re-tune.

On the pellet side some rifles that have caught my attention are: Weihrauch HW100, FX Dreamline, Daystate Huntsman Revere. I kind of want a semi-Bull pup/carbine or a standard length rifle. I really like my Brocock Bantam Sniper HR, but I think I’d like to explore some other brands. What are your thoughts and suggestions? If there is anything in particular that you think I should be mindful of please let me know.

I have both the HW100 and the Daystate Revere. Both are excellent rifles, and both are typically German and English, respectively. Disassembly and tuning is easier with the HW. As usual, Daystate wants to keep the owner out of the rifle. But, my Revere has been perfect, and needed nothing. If your use includes carrying the rifle extensively, the Revere is lighter, and I might choose it as a woods rifle. Both are classic platforms, probably an expansion of original 12 fpe rifles, typical in Europe, non-FAC. As such, shot count and power are not huge in the US-spec rifles, but certainly adequate. Have fun.

I know I like my Daystate huntsman revere.Light,And very comfortable. It’s the most comfortable air gun that I own and I have ever shot. It’s even more comfortable than my sporter powder burners. 40 shots per fill. The build quality is top notch. I don’t know how the HW compares because they look similar. Although I don’t hunt anymore, to me it would be the perfect air gun to hunt with Especially if you were looking for one to carry around for quite a while in the woods.

I had a Regal, one of the best sporter PCP's in .22. I still miss mine but if I were in your shoes, I'd look at the RTI compact and Taipan compact. Both of these offer a more compact package with more power on tap plus more shots.

I’ll look at the RTI’s although I’m not too keen on another tactical build. I am trying to stay away from adding more bullpups for now so, I wasn’t looking at Taipans. I want a traditional feeling .22.

Now about this cute little guy ?

rugged, accurate, easily tunable

I've flipped the switch on a Zbrosia Sapsan S 550, my first PCP. This thing checked every box on the list and a few that I didn't even know existed, such as interchangeable barrels so it's like getting 3 for the price of one. It's got a HUGE reservoir and appears to be insanely accurate. Of course having people that can actually shoot helps. I had been looking at a Hatsun because I didn't want to spend a fortune and technically I didn't, by the time I did the upgrades I'd have the same price..rationalization. 😁 Topgun-airguns has a nice review on them. Just something to consider.

@Dairyboy I like my Evol, but I’d also like to continue exploring other brands. From my experience with the one I have, I have established some a benchmark of expectations - more on the high end of the yardstick. It was one of my dream guns and I’m happy to finally own one. However, I’m curious about other rifles. It’s a plus when they’re made domestically so when it comes to warranty, parts, and service I’m less likely to wait for extended periods for replies, service, shipping, etc. as well as for other reasons.

Have you had the opportunity to shoot an Evol Paradigm?

Oh boy! I’ve discovered the RAW HM1000X. This looks like my sort of candidate. And they’re American made?

EZana, I have a RAW HM1000x LRT .22 Chassis, it is the best Air Rifle I have ever shot in terms of build, fit and finish, trigger and accuracy, never a change in POI. It is a bit heavy, although the Chassis version is lighter than the wood versions. They are very simple builds but built like a tank. The barrel in .22 is a LW Polgonal and is non choked and is not pellet fussy and shoots slugs well when you find the one it likes and it was built to shoot the JSB Redsigned 25gr @ 950fps to shoot long range accurately with amartin testing each gun built himself. I de-tuned mine to shoot JSB 18gr @ 950fps and NSA 17.5gr .2175 slugs @ 935ish, getting around 70-80 shots. These are all still built by Martin Rutterford in TN even the ones sold by AF. They are coming out with one that has a 1/2 20 unf adapter for an LDC. You can have Martin build one to your specs as well. AF now does custom work to pre built ones. I purchased mine from Ken Hicks of SPAW who will also tune it to your wants/needs. Martin also has different models, the TM (Target Model single shot only) and a BM (Bench Model) and HM (Hunting Model) All can be built with a bottle or tube. The probe has two parts an outter bullet shape and inner probe that uses NO o'ring on the probe or in the breech! Mine is a slightly older model with a conventional moderator that makes it back yard friendly. Great guns, highly recommended.

I've not but I owned a EVOL Tac .22 15" barrel for some time. Fantastic rifles. So 3" less barrel and AR style instead of classic rifle version.

@dairyboy It’s a beautiful rifle. As a hunter I’d hate to drag that finely crafted stock through the woods and mar it. I am a fan of the classic rifle feel and look, maybe it’s a nostalgia thing. Though they do tend to be heavier. I’ll make it a point check out some of your posts on that Tac 15” configuration.

@Ranchibi I have seen good things in videos about this gun. I like that it’s unchoked and shoots pellets and slugs well. I was looking at the chasis model. I like that it’s lighter. I’m not so big on laminate stocks. I don’t fancy them like I do a wooden stock. For some reason they make me think of particle board as opposed to solid wood. I’m curious about the barrel system and its rigidity. How’s it take leaning the rifle’s barrel against walls and trees? Does it have the potential to change the POI? I also like that they can be taken out to long range. Which rifles that you’ve shot would you say are comparable to the HM1000x?

Yeah for my uses I like AR/Synthetic version guns as well. But if you like the RAWs there fantastic guns I owned a .30 previously also. I have seen a few .22s for sale recently which could save some money.

@Dairyboy I’m not completely sold on this rifle, but it did catch my attention. I’m still gathering information. I do intend to make my next purchase a well informed quality one. Honestly, how do the RAW and Evol compare in your experience? Any notable cons with the RAW?

edit: I just found your 5 year old review of the .30 RAW HM1000x. Informative review. https://www.airgunnation.com/topic/rapid-air-weapons-hm1000x-30-2/?referrer=1

What’s the furthest that you took it out and got consistent results?

Ezana, I've shot quite a few PCP's...FX Impact M3 Sniper, FX Crown/Boss, FX Maverick, FX FT (older model) Daystate Regal & Wolverine, Brocock Compatto, Edgun R5M, Jefferson St Raptor, Prod, Zbroia models (wonderful barrels, similar to CZ) plus others. The barrel has a carbon fiber sleeve and 3 large grub screws holding the barrel in place, there is nothing dainty about this platform. I live right down the street from Joe Brancatto's shop and get to check out all the airguns he has plus his own collection which is large. RAW's like AAA Evols are hand made by a small company and so to me are a custom built PCP. I'd say the older FX Boss would be similar in some ways. But, like I said earlier, the probe on RAW HMx guns are different than any other and snap shut like a mini vault and the trigger usually comes set to 6-8oz from the factory that breaks sweetly. If you can, check one out so you can see for yourself and hopefully can shoot one.
