Three Hatsan 95’s made into carbines. All 3 have Turkish Walnut stocks. Refinished all three, stained and used Teak Oil finish.

I bought this HW35 new in the late 80’s or early 90’s. It was very dark and had a muddy color that covered the grain. It is also Turkish Walnut. I decided it was time for a stock restoration. After removing the old finish and gently sanding to 500 grit the stock was so slick it would not take stain. I only use dyes in desperation. They penetrate so quickly that they can ruin a piece. Especially a project that has many curves and crevices like a gun stock. This was the first time I used the mineral color technique. (Forgot I did) First thing was to tape off the hand checkering. Then loaded a spray bottle with “diluted” formula and sprayed the entire Walnut stock inside and out with the formula, and immediately towel dried it. Basically no change in color at this point. The color change takes several hours to occur and the grain is not lifted. Next vigorously rub down the stock with a soft cotton rag to a smooth shine. Then a few coats of satin or matte amber finish.

This one got a Carver brand walnut stain and then Tru oil. I added to the oil to darken it further then topped off with plain Tru OIL. Don't sand between coats! Waste of time and material. Do several coats then block it out with sandpaper before the last coats. I don't mind some pores left in. It's not a guitar. Used stripper to remove finish. A wire brush over the checkers. Why doesn't Tru oil come in satin as well? Just add a flatting agent. And sell more finish. Many users would buy both.

If your Tru oil has lumps in it Apply with a piece of cotton cloth. Put oil on one side of the cloth then flip it over to apply before you hand rub it. The cloth filters out all the lumps..
