cleaning patches

I have 177-22 & 25 cals I use heavy fishing line for the 177 & a crown saver pull thru for the 22s & 25s just wondering where some of you guys are buying them from & if your using powder burner patches also . Haven't seen anybody mentioned this but I'm curious , as far as the cleaners I know that part . Some times they just seem hard to pull thru . Thanks in advance Darell

With regards to the fishing line, I got tired of buying patches so I now use cotton packing string folded over a few times, 3 for .22 and 5 for .25.

the stuff comes in different widths and is super cheap at any hardware store. You can get the string to be as tight or loose as you need in the bore, the twist in the chord also acts as a dirt trap when pulling through.

I use 3/4" cleaning patches, available from any of the major suppliers. They don't cost much, figure my time is worth more than it would cost to cut up T shirts and rags. Given the various barrels I clean, I have bags of patches, from 3/4" up to 2". Your correct size may vary, based on the design of the pull-through, your technique, and what you put on it. But, 3/4" works well for me on .22, using a PatchWorm and the .22 button, with a little Ballistol. Without the button, a 1 1/8" patch works okay. And I think the patch should feel reasonably tight.

Guess I am what's known as a high volume shooter. I have a rifle, pistol (steel plates) and airgun range on my property. I go through a lot of cleaning patches. I use a rotary cutter (link below) to cut up old tee shirts (light colored). Sure makes the process easier and quicker and with the cost of patches will pay for its self quickly. Add a metal straight edge and you are good to go. I actually place the mat on a corner of my work table and run a steel t-square off of it to make both vertical and horizontal cuts, works for me. https://www.amazon.com/Rotary-Cutter-Self-Healing-9x12/dp/B079347RFX/ref=sr_1_7?keywords=rotary+cutter+set&qid=1554725512&s=gateway&sr=8-7

I go by the fabric store and try not to make all the lady’s there too nervous and I get about 5 or so feet of white flannel. They are so relieved when I ask to buy material, haha.

Then I cut it up into patches as needed. I’m good for about a year since I don’t clean too often and it doesn’t take many patches as the flannel is thicker and really drags stuff out. I just eyeball the size. I think I cut 1.25-1.5” squares. Give or take. Too big and it gets real hard to pull through. Bigger ones go to my .38 Special.

It takes all of about 3-4 minutes to cut a 1.5" strip and then cut that by 1.5" It ain't brain surgery ....1.5, 1.3, 1.7" who cares. I think I get 20 patches from one strip. Takes 5 patches to clean and dry the bore. I've used those thin store-bought patches and I just prefer the heavier material.

And, I'm a Scotch drinker so plenty of time left over to enjoy a glass or two of Oban.....neat

Cheers,
