Classifieds and pricing

I suspect two big players are:

2. It seems interest is waning for airguns that aren’t regulated, side lever and tactical, even if the gun for sale is of a high build quality. And as more favor a tactical design approach (which admittedly has some advantages), there is less appreciation for custom wood.
Ya the guys buying beautiful wood stock sporters are fewer.

You are going to take a hit on a used gun, plus shipping is also high. So, if your gun shoots well keep it and don’t upgrade is how I think when I think about upgrading to the next newest toy. You will also take a hit on accessories that you thought you had to have (guilty), a buyer may not want the extras. Tough nowadays.

Everyone here made great points. There are plenty of reasons. Shipping still counts towards the overall price a buyer is paying for a used gun or item. So if a seller has his stuff priced boarder line, shipping makes it no longer a good deal. All used everything should be a good deal. That’s what make buying used appealing and worth the risk. Maybe people are finally waking up. When a hobby plateaus, people generally get smarter and quit spending out of desperation.

The classifieds have been my friend helping me aquire some of my best and most favorite air guns for less than retail. I check the classifieds several times a day and AOA's used list also. There has been a slowing trend, one would have to be from Mars to think the state of the economy isn't effecting people's spending habits...and I would guess will not improve anytime soon, most likely get worse. Glad I have the guns I have and stock piled pellets a couple of years ago...networking with friends has also been a factor in finding good guns and support items. I feel for the young folks just getting started in life...getting a high (or even low end) air gun is the last thing they have to worry about.

I suspect two big players are:
1. The cost of shipping, and related difficulty for some, dissuade some folks from even listing. Adding $75 to what appears to be a fair but not giveaway price will change the situation considerably.
2. It seems interest is waning for airguns that aren’t regulated, side lever and tactical, even if the gun for sale is of a high build quality. And as more favor a tactical design approach (which admittedly has some advantages), there is less appreciation for custom wood.

Nearly every airgun I own was purchased used, and I generally scour the classifieds first when I’m in the market for something. Im at the place where I have what I need. Maybe that is the third reason why fewer people are buying.
Your last point is very valid. I'm there as well and it would take either a really good deal or a very unique airgun to pique my interest at this point, especially when it comes to the higher end ($1K+) models...

Agreed. It is a buyers market for now.
I fear we will be seeing double digit interest rates soon.
They are already charging double digit interest rates for cars and trucks if your credit score is not
above 800.
tough times ahead.

Doc
Really? No loans in my future then.

Maybe the best option is to not borrow money for a vehicle in the first place. Last new car I bought was a 2017 Cherokee. I paid cash for it and ate beans for 6 months..... After calculating the cost of interest, fees and full coverage insurance over the term of a car loan, I saved 40% by paying cash. Some of us are too poor to afford borrowed money.

I think regarding pricing of used goods, everyone is in a denial phase. For too long it was a crazy sellers' market. Guns, Cars, Machinery, Real Estate, etc. It may be a hard landing for some in the end.

Also depends on the platform being sold. The Ranger XR in .25 is underpowered and the shot count is two magazines. If your Ranger was in .22? It would be sold by now.
Yeah, I’d have to agree with that. 22 is super popular. Unfortunately for me, I’m a 25 cal disciple. Lol!

I personally learned a lesson from a safe full of unused firearms. So maybe that’s also part of why the reluctance of many to simply buy. There are only so many things you can do with any air gun. And the fact, that you can only shoot one at a time? For instance one of my PCPs blew the rest out of the safe. Why? Because the “one” did everything I tasked the others to do. So a guy like me is not looking to buy his next PCP off the classifieds…
This right here! I was thinking of something similar. Once you have what you need for you intended purpoe(s) what’s the point of continuing to buy guns? At that point it’s about working with what I have and becoming proficient or more proficient.

I can’t say that one blows the rest out of the water because I can use various guns for different tasks. On any given day a presence might change. One day I may want to carry a lighter bullpup because I may be walking more or further, so a woods walker is in order. Another day I may want power to carry a larger bullpup. Then I may want to dispatch a larger animal so I I’ll take a larger caliber. Point is my guns have a purpose.

I still peruse the classifieds to browse. I often wonder, “how many times does one renew a sales ad before one takes a break?” If it isn’t selling, why continue to do the exact same thing? Or why discount a $1k by $20? That’s almost like an Optics Planet ad for a 9% or 11% “sale” to me. I’ve also seen ads posted that I suspect the seller of lying to sell something. I just shake my head and go on about my business. I can’t be the only one seeing some of these things. Maybe these are also contributing factors to why some members aren’t buying used guns from there in addition to what others mentioned in this thread.

There's some nice deals on the marketplace now for some guns I certainly wouldn't mind adding to the collection.

But, my collection is good already. The writing is on the wall. Whatever I can afford is going into silver, gold, essential supplies, and a few other future-facing investments. We should be prepared to ride out some tough times, if possible.

one of my biggest concerns is the packaging of said item . there is no limit on what damage shipping can do to an item and even more an individuals perception of just what "well wrapped " is .
I bought an airgun from Krale recently. It came barely packed in anything. Fortunately for me, the gun was pristine. Must not have hit any turbulence anywhere along the flight?

Part of it is the price that the owners put on the item(s).
If I'm interested in something that I don't know the current "new" cost, I'll go looking (thanks internet !).
One thing that I was somewhat interested in earlier today, I did just that, went looking for the current new cost.
I found that the used cost was...a whappen $20 cheaper for a $260 item than new.
Hell no, for that "deal", I'm buying new !

This happens a lot.

Mike
I do the same thing. If I can buy new for a few bucks more, I am not buying used. On a high end air rifle if I buy used I need to be saving several hundred dollars, not $50!! I recently sold a used FX Maverick for $2100 that I had about $3400 into! Someone got a great deal and I moved a gun I wasn't using to move on to something else. A lot of guys are adding mods and bling and then expect to get that out of the sale. Just liking adding accessories to a vehicle, it does not necessarily add value at sale time.
I still peruse the classifieds often just to see what is available. Occassionally make reasonable offers on items that I would buy used if the price was fair.

yes , WHY is it that a shop can package rifles and mostly get safely where it is going , But an individual has to wrap it like it was fragile glass in triple layers and it still gets damaged ?

Everyone wants a deal, sometimes that isn't on a sellers mind. I have one on there, but I'm not dying to get money to buy something else.
The ones that are priced higher then what people are willing to spend are also a risk on the buyer, because they don't know the background of a rifle, just the word of the seller. A seller that has a set price has to be willing to wait if thats what they want.

I blame the Amazon factor on buyers and sellers now. For a seller its they want something else immediately, and are willing to drop their price to get that. When they do that, buyers expect every seller to be like that. Buyers are used to great bargains at our fingertips.

Unfortunately its a risky business buying and selling.

This is one of the hobbys, sports, activities that gets quickly pushed to the side when financials go south. Weve been seeing mass layoffs, higher interest rates, higher credit card debt, and a number of other negative items in the country.

I follow the auto industry as well and have seen lenders offer 10 year auto loans!!

Strange times
100% true statements...
I was in the auto industry for over 35 years, Parts and Service Director, the price of a damn F150 reaching the 100,000.00 mark is ludicrous, that's 25K more than my 1st house cost, then finance the turd for 10 years at 4.9% or higher interest?? You got to be out yo damn mind!!!

Credit card companies getting away with murder as well, 29.99% interest, you will NEVER pay that off.. Loan Sharks i tell ya...

Thank god everything i own is paid for, hard work, smart investing, does pay off, and if i can Not pay cash for it or buy it interest free i do Not need it....!!

People want too much generally. I see 300 dollar plastic and 350 dollar wood stock avengers. It’s like seriously? Or the guys selling pellets for the same price or a little more than you can get them from PA. A place you know is going to package them like Fort Knox so why would you buy here.
Pretty much - the law of supply and demand apply just as much to used as new. And then you've got the couple of threads that came up which I will dub "pelletgate" where some sellers were listing tins as 'full' and 'brand new' which ended up being their leftovers after sorting out all the good ones for themselves. When I first joined here and GTA the rule of 70% was pretty well regarded. Used is used.

There are so many things I see which will turn me off a purchase. First off is silly high pricing. Another is if a person states the gun is new and never shot - I'd rather buy the airgun that's been well used and known to be working. Who doesn't shoot an airgun they purchased - that's crazy suspect in my mind. Then there is the shipping gouge - I use PirateShip and no gun has cost more than $40 to ship for me in a few years.

@ctshooter Me. I have other guns that I really enjoy. I bought one as a project gun and it’s still new in the box only opened to inspect or take pics to sell. I don’t think I’d care if I never sold it. Bought it over a year ago (accessories too). The other gun I never slugged the barrel, so I’m not sure which ammo to buy, so it sits until I decide I want to do that. I pretty much have what I need in the gun’s I active shoot. I really didn’t need those two, but they’re there when I want to mess with them. If I decided to sell them and told you this, would it sound suspicious?

Tough market if you're trying to sell. I lost a ton of money from my past four sales.
I wondered if our hobby is being flooded the past few years, and we are now feeling the impact. The economy isn't helping anything right now.
In the beginning I always knew I was going to lose some money if I sold but right now I'm wondering if this hobby is getting too expensive to play anymore and one should think of getting out before it gets out of hand. Some pcp's are going north of 3k now, and when first got in, I thought $1500 was hard to swallow.
You better not be getting out. We’re setting our guns up together! Shared test mules. Lol
